Dear Sir, My son scored 245 marks in BITSAT exam this year. His interest is to study in BITS Pilani campus only. With these marks he may not be able to get direct admission for BE in CSE or ECE or EE or EEE. However, he is thinking of doing a 5 yrs dual degree of MSc + BE whereby students after certain CGPA cutoff (above 7.8 or so) at the end of 1st yr get either of the above branches or Elect & Instru branch depending upon CGPA. Students then complete both MSc + BE in total 5 yrs. He is planning to opt for either MSc Maths or MSc Economics or MSc Physics in 1st year. Based on last yrs cut off he may get either of these. Kindly advice whether such a dual degree from Pilani campus will carry value. He is also likely to get admission in mid tier NIT Nagpur for BTech in either EEE or ECE or EE or other mid tier NITs like SVNIT Surat or MNNIT Jaipur. Pls advice what should be the preference.
Ans: BITS Dual Degree MSc+BE has its pros and cons. Placements are good, and if he wants to pursue higher studies later, this degree will be very helpful. But it’s a 5-year program, with a minimum CGPA requirement and a significant cost of around 35-40 lakhs.

Given his academic background, maintaining the CGPA shouldn’t be too hard if he studies smartly from the first year. He’ll likely get his preferred branch, depending on the campus he joins.

The most important thing to consider is his interest—what he’s good at, passionate about, and the kinds of problems he wants to solve in the future.

If these factors align, and you as parents are ready for the financial commitment over the next 5 years, BITS Dual Degree could be a great choice. But if money is a concern, it’s better to look at other NIT options you mentioned, keeping his interests in mind. Besides, success in any field depends on many factors beyond just the institution a student attends, which I’ve explained in detail in several previous answers here on RediffGURU.
