Is it possible to reverse diabetes and stop medication

Ans: Diabetes management is monitoring blood sugar levels within the normal range. By following a complex carbohydrate, good protein and low fat diet, you can bring about effective blood sugar control. Avoid high fat and sugar foods, foods containing refined cereals like red meat, maida, fries, packaged, fast foods, etc. as they will add excess calories in your diet and increase fat percentage. Exercise for at least 30 minutes for minimum 5 days a week. As the blood sugar levels are lowered, medication doses can be reduced or altered.

Now a days we are hearing a lot on reversal of diabetes. We hear stories of chronic diabetic patient who were insulin dependant for many years getting free of diabetic medicine in a year's time and also of people who have landed up in ICU's after starting the programme. Can these stories be believed and weather reversal is really possible . Being a diabetic since the last 2 years would like to get a clarity from an expert like you.

Ans: Diabetes remission is a better term than reversal. Patient selection is important and it may not be possible in all. Diet and lifestyle changes are the key, with weight reduction if required. Need guidance with a team of a Doctor and a Registered Dietitan. Initially some medicines may also help with weight and then gradually tapered. Even after remission, regular monitoring may be needed as advised.

I m suffering from diabetes problem since last 15 years and is on allopathic medicines. Is it reverser able .

Ans: Diabetes can be managed with lowering blood sugar levels by following a healthy lifestyle and dietary modifications. Increasing basal metabolic rate by adapting to a high complex carbohydrate and fiber rich diet, with good protein foods and low total and healthy fats will ensure less spikes in blood sugar levels. Exercises which include building muscle mass and lowering body fat will lower the incidence of hyperglycemia. Avoid processed, canned foods, sweets, alcohol, fatty foods, etc. As the blood sugar levels are lowered, medication doses may need to be altered.

Requesting you not to panic at this early stage. Let her appear for JEE session 2 and the state-level engineering entrance test. Let all the results out. You have ample time to think about the available options for engineering admission. At this stage, no need to think about management quota unless and until you want a particular branch in a particular college. Depending on her score in upcoming exams, she may get admission to reputed engineering either in Pune or Bengaluru
