Hello Madam, People say one should not drink water while standing. My parents always advised to drink it while I am sitting. Is there any biological/ scientific reason behind this? Also please guide what may be the bad consequences.

A number of factors can cause water retention, including:

• Standing or sitting for too long
• Menstrual changes
• Fluctuating hormones
• Eating too much sodium
• Medications
• A weak heart
• Flying in an airplane
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Some simple dietary changes may help reduce water retention.

For starters, you can try eating less salt by, for example, cutting back on processed foods.

You can also consume foods that are rich in magnesium, potassium and vitamin B6.

Daily water consumption varies as per age, gender and daily routine.

For women, around 2.7 litres of fluids are recommended. Besides water, these can also include juices, soups, etc.

It is totally safe to add natural flavours to water but use fresh fruits and vegetables instead of packaged products.

Depending on the weather, you can add various fruit/vegetable slices to water like lime, sweet lime or orange.

If you want to cool your body, you can add mint leaves and cucumber slices.
