Hi, My son faces challenges of not doing well in the examination, he is in class XII with PCM and has an extra ordinary logical and analytical ability. All his teachers give excellent feedback about him however, he makes silly mistakes in some subjects, his representation of knowledge in the exam paper is not improving and often leaves a question answered incompletely. Also he had peculiar problem of writing wrong spellings for even simple words which in subjects such as language reduces his overall score. He understand difficult concepts of mathematics and physics very easily and hence aspires quite big. But his exam scores will be bottleneck for the same. Please suggest which kind of consultants( doctors/ Psychologist/Counsellors) we should discuss this for a solution.

Ans: Kindly do a learning difficulty assessment with a RCI registered clinical psychologist. The strategies and support would help.
Check sleep quality and connect with technology to rule off being too tired

Mam, my son has just completed his 12 class in commerce stream. His self confidence is low and in exams he failed to give his 100% and score low marks than his capability. His is also careless in studies. please guide how we can help him and how he can improve on this. We are very much disturbed due to this. Please help...
Ans: Dear Lakhbinder,
That age is a very confusing time for youngsters as they not only have to deal with the expectations of the school and parents but also 'fit in' with their peers.
It is natural to be defocused from academics and not do their best and I do understand your worry especially if he is aiming at a highly academic course after Class 12.

In my experience, working with youngsters, this is what I have understood:

Youngsters are not careless with their studies without reasons.
- They are doing a course which they were forced into or don't have an aptitude for
- They have immense pressure at home and school to perform
- They have been subject to a lot of comparison with those performing well in their class
- They have a lot of unwanted influences through chat apps and social media apps
- They are constantly monitored as to how much effort they are putting
- They are simply giving into their rebellious streaks given the age

It could be any of the above. Do identify and if there are things as a parent you can do, kindly step in NOT as a friend but by being more accepting and FRIENDLY. If it's about focus orientation, seek an expert who in one session will be able to help him through re-training the mind hacks which are simple to follow with amazing results.

All the best!

My Son 13 years, is in 8th std ,ICSE student, When he was in 7th std he was doing good in his MCQ pattern ,But when he entered in 8th std he's become a average student academically, From 8th std school has started taking written Exams of 40marks Terminals,& its found he's not good at learning the answers by heart, Till the 7th std there were no written exams and from 8th std regular written exams has started ,its looks difficult for him to by heart the answers in History,Geography,Science,Hindi, subjects, So how to solve this issue.
Ans: Hi Abhijeet

This is a very usual case. Whenever a child shifts from one method to another, it takes some time to upgrade himself to the new pattern. MCQ test pattern and Written test pattern are different. Both patterns require different skills.

In short, your son is struggling to adapt to the new format of written exams in 8th grade. This shift from MCQs to written exams requires different study techniques, such as active recall, effective note-taking, and practice writing.

To help him improve, you can:
1) Encourage him to use active recall techniques like flashcards and quizzes.
2) Teach him effective note-taking methods like the Cornell method or mind mapping.
3) Help him practice writing essays and join a writing group if possible.
4) Assist him in creating a study schedule and breaking down assignments into smaller tasks.

At last, keep patient, every child is different. Give him some time to adjust to the new pattern. Your motion and support are much needed at this stage and that too without showing any panic on your face.

If you are dissatisfied with the reply, please ask again without hesitation.

Dear Sir, Contemplating on admitting my son to either RVU or RVIT. There seems to be flexibility in course work for RVU syllabus. Both are under RV. Please share your recommendation. Thanks.
Ans: RV University (RVU) and RV Institute of Technology and Management (RVITM), both under the RV umbrella, cater to different educational needs. RVU, established in 2021, is a multidisciplinary university offering programs from engineering to liberal arts, design, and law . It emphasizes interdisciplinary studies, a flexible curriculum, and aims to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. RVU is ranked #2 as an emerging state private university . RVITM, in contrast, is an engineering-focused college that aims to shape future technology leaders .

The key difference lies in RVU's flexible coursework, allowing students to tailor their education across various fields, whereas RVITM provides a specialized engineering education . If your son seeks a broad academic experience with the ability to explore multiple disciplines, RVU is more suitable. If he has a clear focus on engineering, RVITM might be the better choice.

Recommendation
Given the emphasis on flexible coursework at RVU, it might be advantageous if your son has varied interests or is unsure about specializing immediately. If a focused engineering education is desired, RVITM is a strong option. Consider your son's academic preferences and career goals to make the best decision. All the best for your son's admission and a bright future!
