Help! My son has allergies and there's constant dust from highway construction. What can I do?

Hi Dr Deepa, my son is allergic to dust. We stay 100 metres away from the highway. There is construction work in my area which is bringing a lot of dust. My son wears a mask but he is constantly coughing and feeling sick. What can I do to protect my son from dust allergies?

Ans: If he is wheezing or has rhinitis then those can be treated. Prevention consists of avoiding dust, using an air purifier, only wet mopping of floor and surfaces. In severe cases, allergen immunotherapy can be tried

Any kind of allergies should be treated well and the root cause should be cured. I recommend you visit an Ayurvedic practitioner.

Meanwhile, add more of papaya, lime, oranges and pineapple to your diet; they are rich in vitamin C and will help with your allergies.

Have honey water (use mildly warm water), preferably in the morning.

To clear your sinuses, you can try the yoga practice of Jal Neti under guidance from a certified professional.

Also, breathing exercises such as Anulom Vilom work wonders for those with sinus issues.

Start with 5-10 minutes and go up to 45 minutes daily, in open spaces like a garden early in the morning.

If you spend a lot of time indoors in an AC environment, it is advisable to either use the AC with dehumidifiers or invest in an air purifier.

Using essential oils such as eucalyptus oil or mint oil can also be helpful.

Allergy can be due to multiple reasons. You need to increase your immunity in order to reduce the frequent attacks of allergic reactions.

Have a healthy weight based on your BMI, follow a balanced diet with low fat and low simple carbs and include a fitness schedule.

Include immunity boosters like lemon, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, etc. Remain well hydrated.

Focus on increasing muscle mass and lower body fat percentage. Maintain normal levels of important blood parameters.

My grandson aged 4 yrs frequently have Dry coughing suddenly which aggravates in night more.. pl advise for his cure..Also advise for increasing his immunity. Overall his wt is 14 kgs , physique , intelligence, appetite is good.. Thanks Madam.

Ans: Weight is within normal range for his age though slightly below average. A cough that is worse at night could be a warning sign for asthma. Hence I advise you to get him examined by his pediatrician who may advise certain tests.
A diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables build up immunity. Avoid processed and packaged foods especially sweet stuff.

Dear Dr. Myself (43 M ) and my son (8 M),have a common problem. As we wake up in morning or randomly any time during day (but surely in morning), or a sudden exposure to ac ,there is sudden sneezing spurt that last 5 to 10 mins and on average sneeze 10 to 15 times with mild mucus. This prevails all-round the year . Both of us are not suffering from cold as such and nor any congestion in chest..My son goes school at 6:30 am and we think it gets aggravated with shower and to avoid discomfort in school , we ask him to bath in the afternoon.Its difficult to find if we r allergic and to what..or its something else. How can we get rid of it..

Ans: I am quite surprised - "our senior ask to fill the water bottle". Simply deny doing that. Do your work seriously for which you are paid. Give departmental exam for promotion. You can prepare yourself for Indian civil service exam. Do not leave Govt. job.

I am 58 + years old who retired from government service after working for 36 years. I had done M.E mechanical and worked in the marine field. I am a pensioner who is financially sound and with no liabilities. I have a good fitness routine in the morning as well as in the evening , however I find it difficult to pass my time in the day and want to make it meaningful. I am done with my existing skills and keen to learn some totally new concepts and acquire skills specially in areas such as sustainable energy specially green hydrogen, solar , ethanol blending , EV etc. I may like to become a consultant or maybe start my own small venture in future to keep myself busy. I am ready to devote ample time. If nothing works out atleast I would have acquired knowledge in areas which interest me. How do I go about acquiring the new skills.

Ans: The best way to acquire skill is to see NPTEL videos. Its free. If you want certificates then you have to give exam. Cost is very less. Normally professors from IITs teach these courses and you will get certificates from IITs.
