I am an active sportsperson and regularly participate in training sessions and competitions. I have been advised to include protein shakes in my routine to support muscle recovery and performance. Could you please explain how protein shakes benefit athletes, whether they are necessary for all sports persons, and what factors should be considered before including them in a daily diet? Additionally, are natural food sources sufficient, or do supplements offer a significant advantage?

Ans: Protein plays a central role in muscle repair, recovery, and adaptation after training. Athletes often require more protein than the general population, especially in strength and power sports, high?volume endurance training, and for multi?session training days. Shakes can help because they are quick to absorb, convenient, helpful for meeting higher protein needs. Whole foods can absolutely meet protein needs for most athletes. High?quality natural protein sources include eggs, dairy (milk, yogurt, paneer, cheese), chicken, fish, lean meats, lentils, beans, chickpeas, soy products (tofu, tempeh), nuts and seeds. Whole foods provide vitamins, minerals, fiber, and healthy fats, are more satisfying and nutrient?dense and less processed. The best approach is one that fits your training schedule, dietary habits, and performance goals.
