Hi Mayank, my son wants to make his career in athletics. What should he opt for after completing his Class X? Any good colleges that train their students to become athletes?

Ans: Hi Prasanna,

Post his Class Xth, let him focus on subjects and topics that he is most comfortable in. While one school of thought is to push him to pursue Science so that he can do engineering, ideally my recommendation would be to take up a subject that he feels most comfortable about. It will help him focus on training and he can also prepare himself to become a better athlete, in parallel. One of the biggest focus areas that would need to manage is to find a school that respects his passion and gives him enough time to participate in tournaments and also practice. And after his school education, if he wants to pursue sports seriously and build a career, I would recommend you check out options in Australia and the USA, where sports education is considered a strong field & he also gets access to good infrastructure and facilities to practice and prepare. Within India, you have the following institutions that are considered good:

(a) Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education & Sports Sciences, New Delhi
(b) Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Institute of Sports, Patiala
(c) Punjab University, Chandigarh
(d) College of Physical Education, Pune
(e) Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education, Thiruvananthapuram
