I am of age 46 years.. I was not properly aware of financial planning hence start SIP 3 years back and currently doing 40000 SIP. I wish for at least 10 more years to invest. Please suggest how should i plan. Also tell me how can I connect..
Ans: It's great to hear that you've taken the initiative to start investing through SIPs for your financial future. Here's a plan to consider for the next decade of investing:

Assess Current Investments: Begin by evaluating your existing SIPs and their performance. Review the funds' track records, returns, and consistency. Determine if any adjustments or rebalancing are needed based on your risk tolerance and investment goals.
Diversification: Consider diversifying your investment portfolio across different asset classes such as equity, debt, and possibly other alternative investments like gold or real estate investment trusts (REITs). Diversification helps reduce risk and enhances the potential for returns.
Risk Management: As you approach your investment horizon, gradually shift towards a more balanced portfolio with a mix of equity and debt funds. This can help mitigate potential market volatility while still aiming for growth.
Goal Setting: Identify your financial goals for the next decade, including retirement planning, children's education, or any other major milestones. Determine the required corpus for each goal and the timeframe available for achieving them.
Professional Guidance: Consider seeking advice from a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) who can provide personalized financial planning services tailored to your needs and objectives. A CFP can help you create a comprehensive financial plan, optimize your investment portfolio, and navigate through various financial decisions.
Regular Review: Stay actively involved in monitoring your investments and review your financial plan periodically, at least annually or as needed. Make adjustments based on changes in your financial situation, market conditions, and evolving goals.

As for connecting with a Certified Financial Planner, you can reach out to me through my website to schedule a consultation or discuss your financial planning requirements further. I'll be happy to assist you in creating a customized financial plan to achieve your long-term financial goals.

Mutual Funds, Financial Planning Expert - Answered on Oct 23, 2024

Money
Hello Sir, I am 44 years old and running 11k SIP in different mutual funds for last 2 years. Previously also I invested but was not regular. I need around 70 lacs at the age of 55 years. Please suggest.
Ans: You are already investing Rs 11,000 per month in different mutual funds, which is a good start. However, given your goal of Rs 70 lakhs by age 55 (which is 11 years from now), we need to assess whether your current strategy will suffice or if adjustments are necessary.

The Importance of Consistency
Regularity is the key to compounding. Since you mentioned earlier investments weren't regular, it’s crucial to stick with your current strategy. The power of compounding grows significantly with consistency over time.

Three factors influence your final corpus:

Investment Amount: Currently Rs 11,000 per month.

Investment Horizon: 11 years remaining.

Expected Rate of Return: Typically, equity mutual funds have delivered 10-12% over the long term.

You may need to increase your monthly SIP to meet your target. Based on the power of compounding, investing systematically with proper asset allocation will help you reach your goal.

Review Your Asset Allocation
Given your long-term goal, equity exposure is ideal. Ensure that the bulk of your portfolio remains in equity mutual funds, as they have historically provided higher returns than debt instruments over longer periods. But also consider a balanced approach to minimize risks.

Key points to evaluate:

Risk Appetite: How comfortable are you with market volatility? While equities have potential for higher returns, they can be volatile in the short term. You might consider diversifying into hybrid or balanced funds if you're uncomfortable with 100% equity exposure.

Time Horizon: You have 11 years, which allows you to take a slightly higher risk in the initial years and reduce risk as you approach the goal.

Adjusting Your Monthly SIP
Rs 11,000 per month may not be sufficient to reach your Rs 70 lakh target. A rough assessment suggests you may need to increase your SIP amount.

Review Your Current SIP: Check if your existing SIPs are in equity mutual funds with good long-term performance. If not, consider switching to better-performing funds.

Gradually Increase Your SIP: With each year, aim to increase your SIP by 10-15%. This strategy takes advantage of your growing income and the power of compounding.

Tax Implications
Be aware of the tax on mutual fund returns:

Equity Mutual Funds: Gains beyond Rs 1.25 lakh annually are taxed at 12.5%. Short-term gains are taxed at 20% if held for less than one year.

Debt Mutual Funds: Gains are taxed according to your income tax slab. Long-term and short-term gains are treated similarly in debt funds.

Thus, it's essential to plan your withdrawals strategically to minimize taxes.

Rebalancing the Portfolio
As you approach the age of 55, start shifting some of your funds to safer instruments. Around 3-4 years before your goal, move a portion of your equity portfolio into debt funds to safeguard your returns from market volatility.

Equity to Debt Transition: By reducing equity exposure gradually, you can lock in the gains while reducing risks closer to your target.
Benefits of Regular Plans Over Direct Funds
If you are investing directly in mutual funds without the guidance of a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), you may miss out on personalized advice that could optimize your portfolio. While direct funds may have lower expense ratios, regular funds offer professional advice that could help you maximize returns, balance risks, and make timely changes based on market conditions.

Stay Focused on Actively Managed Funds
Avoid index funds or ETFs. Actively managed funds tend to outperform index funds during volatile markets because skilled fund managers can adapt to market conditions. Actively managed funds have consistently delivered superior returns by identifying opportunities and mitigating risks.

Index funds simply mirror a particular index, and while they come with lower costs, they may not offer the growth potential you need to meet your Rs 70 lakh goal.

Liquidity and Emergency Fund
Ensure that you have a liquid fund or a contingency reserve for emergencies. This way, you won’t need to withdraw from your SIPs or mutual funds prematurely. A good rule of thumb is to keep 6-12 months' worth of expenses in an easily accessible form, like a liquid or ultra-short-term debt fund.

Avoiding Insurance-Based Investment Products
Since you didn’t mention holding any insurance-linked investments like ULIPs or LIC policies, I won’t recommend any changes. However, always avoid mixing insurance with investments. Stick to pure term insurance for protection, and keep your investment and insurance needs separate for better returns and lower costs.

Final Insights
To reach your target of Rs 70 lakhs by age 55, consider these points:

Increase your SIP amount gradually to keep pace with inflation and income growth.

Stay focused on equity mutual funds for their long-term growth potential.

Maintain portfolio discipline and avoid impulsive changes due to market fluctuations.

Work with a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) to review and optimize your investments annually.

With these strategies, you're well on your way to achieving your goal.

My son got 245 in bits .He can get any Brecht branch
Ans: Priyanka Madam, by now your son must have been allotted/not allotted any seat by BITS. Please update the status for today. However, please note, A BITSAT score of 245 situates you within the previous two years’ closing-score bands for core engineering streams at the Pilani, Goa, and Hyderabad campuses. At Pilani, the B.E. Chemical Engineering cutoff ranged from 224 in 2023 to 247 in 2024, placing your 245 close to the 2024 threshold and comfortably above 2023’s mark; B.E. Civil Engineering closed at 213 and 238, making admission highly probable; and B.E. Manufacturing Engineering cutoffs of 220 and 243 indicate a strong likelihood of allotment. At Goa, Chemical Engineering closed at 239 in 2024 and 248 in 2023, and Civil around – (not offered in 2024) – but Pilani-equivalent streams suggest safe admission; Manufacturing cutoffs mirror Pilani trends, bolstering your prospects. At Hyderabad, Chemical Engineering cutoffs of 238 and 209 over the two years ensure a secure allotment, while Civil Engineering’s 235–204 band similarly favors your score; Manufacturing at Hyderabad showed closing marks near 218–251, indicating moderate probability. Across campuses, Civil and Manufacturing remain reliably within reach, Chemical at Pilani may require waitlist movement but is feasible given historical fluctuations, and all three streams at Hyderabad and Goa present strong chances. Additional seats open during special iterations further enhance admit probabilities.

Recommendation: Considering consistent cutoff trends and seat matrices, prioritize B.E. Civil and Manufacturing Engineering at BITS Pilani for guaranteed allotment, consider Chemical Engineering at Pilani via waitlist movement, and secure Chemical, Civil, or Manufacturing Engineering at BITS Hyderabad or Goa for assured admission, capitalizing on slightly lower cutoffs and ample seat availability. All the BEST for a Prosperous Future!

Career Counsellor - Answered on Jul 22, 2025

Career
I am working as Business Analyst from past 4 years but I wanted to move to technical role. I have done Btech in CSE from tier-3 college. I wanted some advise on the the best way to switch to a tech role. 1. Taking some online boot camp to get in-depth knowledge and doing side projects over the weekends 2. Taking WILP from BITS in Software engineering/ data science 3. Prepare from GATE 2026 and aim for IITs
Ans: Manjunath Sir, To shift into a technical position, integrating structured learning, credentialing, and practical experience is essential. The recommended pathway combines immersive project-based training with a recognized postgraduate credential while keeping a long-term goal of elite technical qualification. Begin with a part-time online software engineering or data science bootcamp, dedicating weekends to substantial portfolio projects to build hands-on skills and confidence in key stacks . Concurrently, enroll in BITS Pilani’s Work-Integrated M.Tech (Software Engineering or Data Science & Engineering) to earn a UGC-approved postgraduate degree without leaving your job, benefitting from weekend live classes, remote labs covering full-stack or analytics tools, and a final semester dissertation that bridges theory with organizational impact . This dual track—bootcamp plus WILP—provides immediate upskilling, peer and mentor networks, and a formal degree. After 12–18 months, if aiming for top-tier R&D or core engineering roles, commence GATE 2026 preparation via a structured three-phase roadmap: concept building (June–August), full-length practice (September–November), and final mock-test calibration (December–January), targeting a CSE rank
