My daughter is in Tenth Std. and I looking forward that she joins Defence Services. Can you please help out, how she can enter any of the 3 branches? Thanking you Regards, Madhuri Shinde

Ans: Firstly, Wait for the article just about to come on Rediff.com
Also go and check my earlier answers to a similar question too.
Download the syllabus for the UPSC entrance exam which will be held when she will be in class XXII. Must study each of the subjects given there.
Prepare well for the written first. You may like to go for additional coaching too if you feel the need. Very important that she scores maximum in these exams and not just pass.
Keep her physically fit.
Get her into a habit of reading.
Once she passes, we shall discuss the coaching for SSB…
Once again, as I said, wait for the article on preparation for the exam appearing soon.

Sir My daughter as completed her Bachelor in Physiotherapy from Maharashtra University of Health Sciences She is interested in making a career in defence service. Is she eligible as female. If yes what opportunities is available to her. Your advice will be appreciated

Ans: The armed forces recruit physiotherapists on an on required basis and vacancies are very few. But big military hospitals do hire on temporary basis at most major hospitals. As I understand, your daughter is not a MBBS. However she can join the armed forces as a officer by giving CDS exam but not in her field of physio.

Hello Sir - My daughter is aspiring to join IAF. We don’t have any family background of defenseservices. Can you please suggest options on how she can focus to prepare and crack these exams - either through NDA or AFCAT. Do you suggest attending coaching for the preparations. She is right now in 11th Grade in Hyderabad

Ans: She must start preparing for the NDA from now itself. Schedules are available online and so are the subjects. It is better that she joins a class, especially for math which is a difficult exam. If not the NDA, she can do the preparations for CDS/AFCAT post her graduation. She must also start improving her General Knowledge, Service Knowledge and General awareness levels from now itself. Sir, my daughter is interested in joining forces from SSB, can you please suggest a good coaching institute to prepare for that she has recently completed graduation. Although we are in Surat, Gujarat but I am ready to take her to best institute anywhere to fulfil her dreams.

Ans: Institutes are similar all over, but look for one which does not teach the child short cuts to success. What your daughter needs to know is what happens at the SSB and nothing else. I am not aware of good coaching institutes in Surat, but Pune definitely has a few. You haven’t told me what competitive exam has she cleared and what arm or service she wants to apply for.

Please guide me with the list of these schools which are undertaking admission for girl child. I am 42years old male ,my sugar level is in fasting 112.is it normal or need to take medicine.

Ans: It is a bit on the higher side with normal being 100. It would be a good idea to either check the HBA1C to be a bit more certain, else just try and reduce your carbs as well as over all calorie intake to reduce the fasting sugars. This is of course assuming you are a little overweight. If not, you should see a physician and get some more specific advice.

Sir, I am 63 yrs. Last year I suffered from BP 170/110. I went to a Physician and as per his advice I am taking the tablets Nicardia 10mg 1 tablet alongwith Telista 20mg 1 tablet @ morning 9am and Nicardia 10mg 1 tablet at night 9pm. Now for the past three months my BP controlled 120/70 (OR) sometimes 110/70. Can I continue the same or to reduce the dose.

Ans: If the BP recorded multiple times is remaining a bit low, it maybe possible to reduce the dose. However, you should see the physician, have the BP checked in the clinic, and discuss the new dosages.

Ans: Triglycerides are largely an interplay of their metabolism, diet and genetics. You would benefit from reducing consumption of non fibre carbs, excessive processed foods and fried foods. Would also help to exercise at least 5 days a week. Recheck your lipids after 3 months and see your doctor.

I was advised by one doctor to take Ecosprin AV 75 while two other doctors advised me to stop it as it can be harmful in the long run. My sugar levels are 6.2 Hb1AC and triglycerides 81. Cholestrol levels are also normal.

Ans: Aspirin and Statin are suggested based on the risk for cardiovascular disease. Diabetes is a big risk factor. If you have even one more risk factor, it makes sense to take Aspirin and Statin, to maintain your LDL below 70. You have not mentioned your LDL. I would recommend you get one formal consultation to understand the various risk factors and interventions.

Ans: That's quite good. Tending ever so slightly towards pre-diabetes but with proper diet and exercise, this will remain this way or get even better. If not it has potential to go to diabetes quite rapidly, especially since you are around the age of 40.

My total cholestrol is only 99 with HDL at 33 and LDL at 55 and the VLDL is 11. Trygliciride is also 66. Is low HDL a cause for concern even though total is very low. My levels has always been like this with maximum total being at 125.

Ans: There are a lot of genetic variations in cholesterol levels from family to family. By and large these numbers are ok. HDL can be improved a little with regular exercise.

Ans: The level is ok as far as fasting sugar goes. It would also help to know the actual liver numbers and the HBA1C , which is the 3 months avg of the sugar levels. That would help understand the level of sugar control better. And sugar control is very important for the liver as well, among other precautions.
