My suggestion right now is that since the current BSc physics honours is not really working out for him, you should not choose to pursue MSC physics

Not to mention a whole lot of IITs

Ans: Not really actually. In addition to CAT, there are several other exams like NMAT, SNAP, IIFT, XAT to name a few.

There are several smaller (local) ones as well.

Also, for MBA outside India; GMAT is used.

If you plan to prepare for CAT, there is no better time than right now. CAT isnt really a difficult exam. It just is tad bit more tricky than the others.
