Career
**Question for Rediff Guru: Guidance for Becoming a Commercial Pilot** My nephew is from Hyderabad and has a strong interest in becoming a commercial airline pilot. He is currently completing his B.Tech in Computer Science and is also in the process of clearing a few academic backlogs. We would like to understand the correct pathway for him from this stage. Could you please guide us on the following: 1. **Eligibility:** Can he pursue commercial pilot training while completing/after completing his B.Tech and clearing his backlogs? 2. **Medical tests:** What medical examinations should he complete **before spending money on any aviation training**? Should he first undergo a DGCA Class 2 medical and then Class 1 medical? Are there any specific tests for eyesight, colour vision, hearing, BMI, ECG, etc. that we should be particularly concerned about? 3. **Entrance/exams:** What DGCA examinations such as **DGCA CPL papers, EASA/FAA exams**, or other tests would he need to take? 4. **Training pathway:** Since we are based in Hyderabad, would you recommend starting flight training in India or going abroad? 5. **Best flight schools:** Which are the **best and most reliable flying schools in India** for CPL training? We are particularly interested in schools with good safety records, aircraft availability, experienced instructors and a good track record of students completing training on time. 6. **Training abroad:** Would you recommend countries such as the **USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada or South Africa** for his CPL training? What are the advantages and disadvantages compared with India? 7. **Airline career:** If the ultimate goal is to become an airline pilot with airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, Akasa Air, etc., which training route would give him the best prospects? 8. **Cost and duration:** What would be a realistic **total budget and timeframe**, including flight training, accommodation, exams, medicals, DGCA conversion/licensing, type rating and other expenses? 9. **B.Tech decision:** Since he is already pursuing B.Tech CSE, should he **complete the degree first**, or would it make sense to start pilot training alongside/after clearing his backlogs? 10. **Risks:** What are the major mistakes families should avoid when selecting a flying school or paying a large amount upfront? We would especially appreciate a **step-by-step roadmap from Hyderabad**, starting with the medical assessment and academic requirements and ending with obtaining a CPL and becoming eligible for an airline pilot job. If possible, please also suggest **2–3 flying schools in India and 2–3 overseas options** that you would personally shortlist for a student from Hyderabad, along with the approximate cost and expected training duration.
