Kindly advice, how to develop appetite in 4 years old boy who does not like to have. The mother struggles to convince her son and quite often fails. The child growth rate is poor as immunity also lacks. Looking forward to your valuable expert advice. G ABDUL LATHEEF Grand father of the child.

Ans: He should be examined by his ped for iron deficiency, worm infestation. Stop all junk food and sweets including biscuits. Milk intake should be limited to 1 or max 2 glasses a day and not with bottle. Make healthy variations of pizza, noodles , pasta and burgers.

Dear Komalji, My son is seven years old. His weight is around 21.5 kg. I feel that his physique is too lean. He is not much interested in food. Every time, we have to push him to eat. He falls sick very often, especially with throat infection. His daily diet is: Breakfast: Milk every day with PediaSure powder and bread/egg white/chapati/paratha on rotation basis. Before lunch: Apple/Orange/Seasonal fruit Lunch: Usually Chapati/Rice/Dal sabzi Evening: Milk with PediaSure powder Dinner at 9 pm: Usually Chapati/Rice/Dal sabzi This is almost his daily routine. The problems we are facing: He doesn’t eat much. He falls sick very often. He is too lean but active. Please advise a good plan for him. Regards Avinash Kumar

The growth of a child is influenced by poor or adequate nutrition, environment, exercise, hormones, serious or chronic illnesses, etc.

Based on his activity and nutritional requirements, he needs to take a high protein diet which will help increase his muscle mass.

Include protein-rich foods like eggs, low fat dairy products, nuts, lean meat, etc, in every meal.

Add lots of vegetables, fruits and salads in his diet to include antioxidants and fibre which will improve his gut health.

His immunity will improve with a good nutritional balance in his diet and energy-dense foods to sustain his activities.

He must drink enough water to remain well-hydrated, sleep for at least eight hours daily and have a happy social environment.

Hi Dr Aarti, I had written earlier about my 2 year old son regarding his screaming which has now subsided so thanks for the advice then. Over the last year my son's not gained any weight and this largely has been contributed by his habit of NOT eating. We'v tried different tips and tricks but they don't seem to work anymore and we have to subject to the TV at times for meal times only. However lately TV or No TV he just isn't interested in eating anymore. Although we've tried a variety of items from sweet to savory to traditional home made food, he's moody and generally dismissive of anything presented to him (apart from French Toast at times). I do understand as he gets older and more conscious this won't be a problem but for now how do we as parents tackle this to ensure he's invested in eating?

Ans: You can make him feel the different texture and aromas of food. Let him taste it by pairing with his choice of food. The non preferred food can be in very little quantity as good as a size of grain initially.
I am glad my first strategy worked for you. You can try this too. I am sure it will work for your little one to get healthy food habits.

Hello Mam, My son is 10 years old is very lezzy he is not doing excercise not listening to me. Not agrees to go to cricket/karate or any other class. Just want to play mobile games, watching TVs. not ready to do outdoor activities due to this his weight increases stomach and chest come out. Behaving arogantly with his mother usually. Please guide me.

Ans: Make a proper timetable with only one hour of screen time. Demarcation of time for play and outdoor activities. For rude behaviour, screen time should be cancelled.
If necessary, consult a child psychologist

My son is not eating properly. He is 6 years old. He doesnt finish his food at home. He brings his dabba back. But when he is hungry, he is always craving for snack, packaged food and sugary items. He is influenced by his friends in the building and kids at school who bring chips and kurkure as bus tiffin. How do I make him understand?

Ans: He should be told that he will get one junk food of his choice say once a week . Stick to this even if he doesn't eat his tiffin. Also try different healthy options trying out new recipes for eg millet noodles or pancakes. Set a healthy example yourself.

There are good chances of obtaining core branches like Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering in newer NITs such as NIT Mizoram, NIT Nagaland, NIT Sikkim, and NIT Srinagar, as well as in newer IIITs like Manipur, Dharwad, and Agartala.

Regarding GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes), core engineering programs are available at BIT Mesra and IIEST Shibpur. In Silchar and CU, programs like Computer Science Engineering (CSE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) are accessible. Hello sir I secured 461117 rank in jee mains 2026 as an EWS student which is not well rank but I don't want to take drop for a year JEE presentation so I want to take an addmission in btech cse program and my home state is odisha so I want to know in which government engeneering colleges or best private colleges with low fee and well ROI can I take addmission in Colleges like VSSUT,OUTR,IGIT Sarang and silicon university bhubaneswar in CSE btech. Ans: Chances with CSE at VSSUT/OUTR seem dim/nil. IGIT CSE is difficult/borderline. But private options like Silicon University and other Odisha private colleges are realistic for CSE. In government colleges, target lower branches at Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology, Sarang, or lower-tier state colleges rather than top Odisha govt CSE.
