Hi Doctor, I am 37 year old male and an athlete since last 20 years. I run marathons very frequently. In recent times I am experiencing a crunching sound from my left knee every time I run on an upward slope. What can be the reason? It doesn't pain nor does it cause any discomfort to me. However, wanted your advise on ways to keep good health of my knees and also the reason for crunching sound. Thanks in advance.

Ans: Hi.. Thank you for your query. The crunching sound in your knee, called “crepitus,” is common in long-term athletes and often occurs due to natural wear of the knee cartilage as we age. This sound may also result from the knee being a weight-bearing joint, which endures stress, especially with uphill running. While it doesn’t necessarily indicate damage, it’s wise to visit a physiotherapist to assess the joint and ensure optimal knee alignment and mechanics. Strengthening the muscles around the knee, especially the quads, hamstrings, and calves, can help support the joint and reduce stress. Low-impact cross-training, such as cycling or swimming, can also provide relief by reducing joint impact. Additionally, wearing well-cushioned footwear, warming up thoroughly, and maintaining flexibility with regular stretching are important for knee health. If pain, swelling, or discomfort develops, further evaluation might be necessary to rule out any underlying issues.
