My 5 YO son is addicted to gadgets. He gets very angry if we switch it off. We have tried to hide the TV remote, change the password on the mobile and set strict rules for TV and gadgets at home. He agrees temporarily. But on the rare occassion he gets it for a few extra minutes on an available device, he displays the same behaviour. How do we fix this?

Ans: The screen time takes away lot of productive time of the child and doesn't allow them to develop their skill sets.
So to reduce it , we need to take care of following:

1.You should gradually reduce it and at a time when you are there to monitor and are able to spend time with him.

2.You should be giving him equally reinforcing activities( reading books, sensory activities etc) so that the child is able to spend more time with Activity instead of gadgets.

3. Consistency is the key , hence being consistent with your efforts is important.
4.Once you achieve the goal of reducing at one time, you can gradually start the same at other time intervals too.

Dr Bakshi how can I limit my child's screen time in a positive way? My son gets very annoyed when I switch off the tv or limit his screen time. How do I deal with his tantrums and aggressive behaviour?

Ans: Dear Divya, Hope and fear in my opinion are the strongest emotions. And we learn parenting on the job. Secondly, mirroring is a well-worked upon strategy. Technology, including screen time gives us 'dopamine' and increases our senses uses. On the contrary, a normal paced life seems no fun and 'monotonous'. Every child wishes to push boundaries and present their self-identity. This leads to arguments and tempers soaring on both sides, a parents and also from the child. Strategies that help: 1. Put down your device and talk of your day to the family. 2. Listening, and agreeing, discussions as a family while eating meals is a great connect. 3. Having no-tech zones as bedrooms and dinning tables is another. 4. Lastly, give the child half an hour during a weekday and an extra 1 hour during weekends helps. It's 'what should I do' 'I am bored' reasons that demand the 'dopamine fix. And Divya, inviting children of the same age who all play together with your child works. Family game nights, dancing together and bed time stories work too. Do revert, on what worked.

Hello My son is addictive to scree in form of videos, web series or games. I tried many things like make him understand or by giving treats if he reduced screen time or sometimes scolding but nothing is working. He is like habitual and whenever he gets chance he just grab a mobile, tab or remote of telivision. Please guide me how to change his habit. I am really worried as this is affecting his health and study. Thank you in advance.

Ans: Coming out of screen addiction is hard but with your consistency and resilience it can be done.
You can take a note of entire number of hours been spent on the screen.
After this try to reduce it by each day or two only half an hour to hour and praise the effort taken to do that. Motivate your child to have some fun times together with you by going for walks and starting participation in some sort of games together. It's going to be a gradual process then it will not be overwhelming for both of you.

Ans: You can involve the child in alternative activities and keep him engaged. There can be various sensory Activities like sand Play, water play etc. which will be equally or more reinforcing and this will help you to reduce the screen time.You should avoid giving screen time and it should not be more than 15 to 20 min in a day.

My son is 17 years and should write 11th class final exams in feb 2024. He is addicted to mobile & distracted from studies . He roams around with friends till late night. When i get strict , seize his mobile and tell him to study and write exams before getting the mobile back, he black mails me saying he will not write exams, he will discontinue studies, go work and earn etc. what is the solution?

Ans: It's important to understand that how is he faring in his studies.All of a sudden if you reduce he might not be able to adhere to it. But a gradual decrease in any behaviour is recommended. This way you will also not feel disheartened and even he will be able to do with out it for short intervals. He can be praised for the amount of efforts he takes to be without the mobile and doing his studies. Regular praises can act as a reinforcement to increase the probability of right behaviours.

Hi, I’m genuinely worried about my 5-year-old son’s growing attachment to screens. What started as occasional cartoon time or a few educational videos on a tablet has now turned into a full-blown addiction. Whether it’s TV, a phone, or a tablet, he’s glued to the screen, and the moment we try to take it away, he throws massive tantrums -- screaming, crying, and sometimes even refusing to eat or sleep until he gets it back. Initially, it felt harmless. We thought a little screen time would keep him engaged, especially during meals or long car rides, and honestly, it gave us some breathing room to get things done. But now, it feels like we’ve created a monster. He’s losing interest in toys, outdoor play, and even interacting with other kids. When we suggest activities like drawing, reading, or puzzles, he dismisses them and demands the screen instead. Doctor, how do we approach this problem without triggering endless meltdowns every time we limit his screen time?

Ans: It will be difficult but you have to be firm
Tell him that he has a total time of 1 hour. To be divided as per his choice. But once the time is reached take the screen or remote away. Regardless of the tantrum , the rule should not change. It will take a week till he realises you are serious and won't back down. Take him to a children's park or organise a play time with a friend or a trip to the zoo on holidays. Start reading a book with him.

His dad is a cardiac patient and mom is being treated for cancer. He comforts me by saying he will get separated soon and we will get married because he only loves me. We have been in a relationship for 14 years and despite everything we tried, his parents refused to accept me, so he chose to get married to someone who understands our situation. I don't know when he will separate from his wife. She knows about us too but she comes from a traditional family. She also confirmed there is no physical intimacy between them. I trust him, but is it worth losing my youth for him? Honestly, I am worried and very confused.

I understand how difficult it is to let go of a relationship you have built from scratch, but is it really how you want to continue? It really seems to be going nowhere. His parents are already in bad health and he married someone else for their happiness. Does it seem like he will be able to leave her? So many people’s happiness and lives depend on this one decision. I think it’s about time you and your BF have a clear conversation about the same. If he can’t give a proper timeline, please try to understand his situation. But also make sure he understands yours and maybe rethink this equation. It really isn’t healthy. You deserve a love you can have wholly, and not just in pieces, and in the shadows.

Hi Anu, My husband doesn't do house chores. We both work full-time, but I still end up cooking, cleaning, and doing laundry. When I ask for help, my partner will say, ‘Just tell me what to do,’ but then he conveniently forgets. Maybe he doesn't like it or he is genuinely forgetful. I have tried many ways to make him explain. Once I only did my share of laundry to make him realise but he simply ignored. Every week this pattern repeats. Is this normal? How can married couples divide responsibilities fairly to avoid fights?

Every home has a different routine and share of responsibilities. So, there's no standard norm to challenge it as normal or not!
So, if you want your husband to pitch in, then say it in clear terms, especially since he has told you to tell him what to do.
Once you have told him, do make sure to ask him: Will you find it convenient to do it now or later? If later, when?
This will ensure that he makes a statement of commitment, so there's no question of forgetting it, right? Play it smart...it's better than feeling bad about the situation or mulling over why something does not work.

I assume your son is not enrolled in any foundation program for the IIT Entrance Exam. He must enroll in good training institute, for a 2 year program. Please ensure the coaching is good, not some kind of franchisee taken by some local person. rest they will take care of. By 11th end his 70% syllabus must be over, means He starts in April 2026, then in Apr-May 2027 his 70% syllabus must have been completed.

My son will be appearing for JEE Main & JEE Advanced 2026 and will participate in JoSAA Counselling 2026. I request clarification regarding the GEN-EWS certificate date requirement for next year. I have already applied for an EWS certificate for current year 2025, and the application is under process. However, I am unsure whether this certificate will be accepted during JoSAA 2026, or whether candidates will be required to submit a fresh certificate for FY 2026–27 (issued on or after 1 April 2026). My concern is that if JoSAA requires a certificate issued after 1 April 2026, students will have only 1–1.5 months to complete the entire procedure, which is difficult considering normal government processing timelines. Also, during current JEE form filling, students are asked to upload a GEN-EWS certificate issued on or after 1 April 2025, or an application acknowledgement. This has created confusion among parents regarding which year’s certificate will finally be valid at the time of counselling. I request your kind guidance on: Which GEN-EWS certificate will be accepted for JoSAA Counselling 2026 — a certificate for FY 2025–26 (issued after 1 April 2025), or a new certificate for FY 2026–27 (issued after 1 April 2026)?

You need not worry about the EWS certificate. Even if you apply for the next year's certificate on 1 Apr 2026, the second session of JEE MAINS will still be held, followed by JEE ADVANCED, which will be held in May. JOSAA starts in June. so you will have 2 months in hand for fresh EWS certificate.
