My 13 YO is addicted to junk food. He weighs 64 kg and is borderline obese. He used to be good at sports but now that he goes to tuition and extra classes there is no time for exercise. He doesn't eat his tiffin but saves his pocket money to buy chips and order junk food on his way home or when he steps out of the house. If we don't give him pocket money, he still manages to get it through his friends. How can we stop these habits? I am really worried about his health

Ans: You can explain about the health complications. The meals at home should be completely healthy. Consult a dietician along with your son for a detailed health plan that will work out for him. Also consult a psychologist for counselling your son

- Try and restrict the frequency of junk food, rather than directly zeroing down, reduce it gradually
- Parallely start introducing, homemade food and bring in more variety with home made food, so the urge to eat out reduces automatically
-Make the home made food appealing.

My kid loves snacking on Lays chips. She is 9 years old and is addicted to chips. If we don't give it, she finds a way to share it with her friends at school or in the building. It is so addictive that she throws a tantrum which we often don't encourage. But there are other kids who are also addicted and parents and grandparents have no control. Their excuse is, it's just a small packet of chips. Why do kids ask for snacks so much? How can I stop it? Please help.

Ans: Junk food gives immediate satisfaction almost like a drug. Hence gets addictive. Explain to her the ill effects and tell her that she can have one small packet once a week. Once she gets used to that and stops craving, then increase the duration to 2 weeks and then a month. It will take time and patience

He is influenced by his friends in the building and kids at school who bring chips and kurkure as bus tiffin. How do I make him understand?

Ans: He should be told that he will get one junk food of his choice say once a week . Stick to this even if he doesn't eat his tiffin. Also try different healthy options trying out new recipes for eg millet noodles or pancakes. Set a healthy example yourself.

My daughter is 13 years old. Since the last few months, she has started dieting because she says she looks 'fat' compared to girls on Instagram. She skips breakfast before school, avoids ghee, rice and rotis. She wants us to buy her protein bars and 'healthy snacks'. If we don't buy she doesn't eat. I am worried. How to convince her?

Ans: It depends what her weight to height position is on the graph. Ask your pediatrician to plot this and show her what the ideal range is and where she stands
As far as healthy snacks or protein bars are concerned, they are good options
For breakfast make healthy options like millet pancakes or whole wheat pancakes, muesli with no added sugar, dalia or quinoa upma etc. Even meals can be made healthier with more vegetable and salad helpings and replacing desserts with fruits.

Good Afternoon Sir, I need your guidance regarding my admission situation. I scored 77 percentile in JEE Main and 95 percentile in MHT CET. Unfortunately, I got a compartment in CBSE Class 12 Chemistry, so I am currently not eligible for MHT CET CAP rounds or JEE-based admissions. As a result, my current percentile scores are of no use this year. My compartment examination is scheduled for 28th July, and I am confident that I will clear it. Given this situation, I wanted to ask: - Should I take admission in a below-average college that is still available after clearing the compartment? - Or would it be better to take a one-year drop, prepare again, and aim for a much better college next year?

Ans: I could have given a more accurate response if you had also shared your 12th Grade Maths and Physics marks. However, based on the information provided, I want to remind you—in case you are not already aware—that you need to ensure a score of at least 75% or be in the top 20 percentile in your board exams. Scoring above the 96 percentile in JEE 2027 will be extremely challenging but not impossible based on your JEE 2026 performance. Your MH-CET performance is good and can be further improved with focused preparation over 7-8 months. The large disparity between your JEE and MH-CET results is unclear to me. To answer your question, I suggest considering a drop year to prepare well and strategically for both exams. Additionally, it is advisable to have at least 8-9 backup options apart from JEE and MH-CET, such as COMEDK, PERA-CET, VITEEE, AEEE, SITEE, etc., and/or register with some reputed colleges that accept your Board Exam or JEE scores. I'll most likely be joining RVCE this year. My KCET rank is 42x and my COMEDK rank is 36x. Based on previous cutoffs, I'm assured a Core CSE seat through COMEDK, while through KCET I might get Core CSE if the cutoffs move, but AI/ML is almost certain. I'm a bit confused about Core CSE vs the CSE Allied branches (AI/ML, Cyber Security, Data Science, etc.), so I'd really appreciate some guidance. 1. What are the major differences between Core CSE and CSE Allied in terms of syllabus, degree awarded (does it mention the specialization or just B.E. in CSE?), placements 2. If the syllabus differs, from which semester do the branches start diverging? Roughly how much of the coursework is different? 3. During placements and internships, are Core CSE and CSE Allied students treated equally by recruiters, or do some companies prefer/restrict to Core CSE? 4. For someone aiming to become a software engineer, does choosing AI/ML, Cyber Security, or Data Science put you at any disadvantage compared to Core CSE? 5. If I get AI/ML/Cyber/Data Science through KCET but Core CSE through COMEDK, do you think paying roughly ₹1.8 lakh extra for Core CSE is worth it?

Ans: At RVCE, CSE Allied (AI/ML, DS, Cyber) is almost at par with Core CSE. Choose KCET Allied over paying ?1.8 lakh extra for Core CSE via COMEDK.
