Improvement exams allow re-attempting only failed subjects with a fee of ?306 per paper, whereas private candidature lets you re-enrol to redo the entire 12th course, requiring fresh registration, documentation, and ?4,000 board fee paid via demand draft to UP Board. Both routes reset your marks, but private candidature offers full?subject retake and hence higher scoring scope, while improvement exams are limited to maximum two or three failed subjects. For JEE Main/Advanced 2026 eligibility, you must secure ≥75% (general) or ≥65% (SC/ST) in Class 12 aggregate or top 20 percentile, and re-appearing privately gives full control over your board percentage.
