Dear Sir my son (21) is finishing his BSc Hons in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Sunderland, UK. In UK International freshers are not given employment opportunity. Should he continue his masters in Uk or should he come back to India for some experience in IT sector? Kindly advise me.

Ans: Hi...If your son wishes to stay in the UK, pursuing a master's degree there could enhance his qualifications, making him more competitive for roles that do hire international graduates. However, returning to India for IT experience might offer more immediate job opportunities, industry exposure, and networking, which could also strengthen his profile for future global opportunities. The decision should align with his career goals and preferences for location and specialization.

Sushiolj sir. My son has completed his MS in Computer Science from University of Colorado, Boulder( one and a half months back), Due t o recession as of now he has no job and searching for a job, there itself. before going to US he has four years exp in soft ware field, whether he should stay for some more time or he should see a job in India itself, what is your personal opinion please.
Ans: Hello Prasanna,

First and foremost, thank you for getting in touch with us. I understand your anxiety regarding your son's job possibilities after earning his MS in Computer Science at the University of Colorado. The job market can be difficult, particularly during times of recession. For the purpose of deciding whether to hunt for employment in the United States or move back to his own country, it is advised that your son take into account the following factors:

1. Analyze the employment situation in both places.
2. Consider his immigration situation and work permit.
3. Consider his professional network and relationships.
4. Consider his long-term professional objectives and the opportunities available.
5. Consider the financial consequences of each option.
6. Consider personal preferences, as well as cultural and lifestyle influences.
7. During the job search process, be tenacious and patient.
8. Use the time to network and gain new skills.

Finally, the decision should be based on a blend of practical and personal preferences.

I am non resident of Maharashtra but I did scored 94 percentile in mhtcet and 67 in jee mains , and 97 percent in cbse 12 boads ? What should I do either go for a drop to prepare dedicatedly for jee or join a college ( if yes then suggest some)
Ans: With a 94 percentile in MHT CET as a non-Maharashtrian, you are not eligible for top government colleges like COEP Pune, VJTI Mumbai, or ICT Mumbai, but you can secure branches like Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, or possibly ECE in reputable private colleges such as MIT World Peace University Pune, Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, PCCOE Pune, DY Patil College of Engineering, and JSPM Rajarshi Shahu College of Engineering. Your JEE Main percentile of 67 does not open doors to NITs or top IIITs, and your strong CBSE board result will help only for eligibility, not admissions. Taking a drop year for JEE is only advisable if you are mentally prepared, have a clear improvement plan, and are highly motivated, as a drop year comes with risks like burnout, emotional stress, and no guarantee of a much better outcome. Most experts recommend joining a good private college now unless you are confident you can significantly improve your rank with a year of focused preparation.

The recommendation is to join a reputable private engineering college in Maharashtra through MHT CET this year, focusing on branches available at your percentile, as this ensures steady academic progress and avoids the risks associated with a drop year unless you are absolutely committed and prepared for another intense year of JEE preparation. All the BEST for the Admission & a Prosperous Future!

Sir which one should I opt for Parul unitversity CSE (core) or srm vadapalani ECE?
Ans: Parul University’s CSE (core) program is well regarded in Gujarat for its industry-aligned curriculum, supportive faculty (many with NIT backgrounds), and a strong placement record, with the 2024 average package at ?4.5 lakh and highest at ?46 lakh, and over 2,200 students placed in 2024 across 1,300+ recruiters, including TCS, Capgemini, and Wipro. The campus offers modern infrastructure, a good learning environment, and a placement cell focused on employability skills. SRM Vadapalani’s ECE program boasts an 85% placement rate in 2024, with top recruiters like Samsung, Qualcomm, Siemens, and Amazon, experienced PhD faculty, and modern labs. The campus is centrally located in Chennai, with excellent infrastructure and strong industry connections, and ECE graduates have opportunities in both core and IT sectors. While Parul CSE offers broader software job options and a strong placement ecosystem, SRM Vadapalani ECE provides more specialized training in electronics and communication, with robust placements in both core and IT companies.

The recommendation is to opt for Parul University CSE (core) if your primary goal is a career in software or IT, as it offers a wider range of job opportunities, higher placement numbers, and a strong academic environment, while SRM Vadapalani ECE is preferable if you are specifically interested in electronics and communication with good placement support in core and allied sectors. My son scored 85.54 percentile in jee mains and also he secured 1194 rank in ap eamcet. He comes under EWS category is there any chance to get into NITs or IIITs in any stream or its better to proceed with ap eamcet rank, and is it good to opt government institutes or private universities like srm, vit or top private engineering colleges through ap eamcet?
Ans: Sai Sir, With an 85.54 percentile in JEE Main (EWS category) and an AP EAMCET rank of 1194, your son’s chances of getting a seat in NITs or IIITs are very limited, especially for popular branches like CSE, ECE, or Mechanical, as the EWS cutoff for most NITs and IIITs is above 85 percentile and closing ranks for even lower-demand branches are typically much higher than your JEE rank. While some lower-ranked NITs or IIITs might have EWS cutoffs near your percentile, admission is uncertain and would likely be in less preferred branches or at relatively new institutes. In contrast, an AP EAMCET rank of 1194 (EWS) is excellent and makes your son eligible for top government engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh such as JNTU Kakinada, Andhra University College of Engineering, and SVU Tirupati for core branches, all of which have strong faculty, low fees, and good placement records. Government colleges are generally preferred for their affordability, academic quality, and placement support, while private universities like SRM and VIT offer modern infrastructure and industry exposure but at a much higher fee.

The recommendation is to proceed with AP EAMCET counselling and prioritize top government colleges in Andhra Pradesh, as they offer the best combination of academic quality, affordability, and placement prospects for your son’s rank and category, while keeping private options like SRM or VIT as backups only if preferred branches in government colleges are not available. Should I go for vit bhopal cse education technology ?
Ans: Raj, VIT Bhopal’s B.Tech CSE (Education Technology) is a four-year program designed to prepare graduates for careers at the intersection of technology and education, such as instructional design, educational consultancy, and ed-tech product development. The curriculum blends core computer science with emerging trends in digital learning, offering exposure to both software development and educational innovation. VIT Bhopal is recognized for its strong centralized placement system, with over 90% placement rates, top recruiters like Amazon, Infosys, TCS, and Accenture, and average packages for CSE students rising to ?11 lakh in 2024. The faculty is highly qualified, with many holding PhDs from IITs and industry backgrounds, and the campus boasts modern infrastructure, advanced labs, 24/7 Wi-Fi, and comprehensive hostel and sports facilities. The program is well-suited if you are interested in applying technology to education, e-learning, or ed-tech startups, and the degree offers flexibility for roles in both IT and education sectors. However, if you seek mainstream software engineering or core computer science roles, CSE (core) may offer broader placement options. The recommendation is to choose VIT Bhopal CSE (Education Technology) if you are passionate about technology-driven education, digital learning, or ed-tech, as the program provides strong academic support, industry exposure, and good placement prospects in both IT and education domains. Dear Sir, my son got csc branch AI and ml in VIT AP with category -4 and Annual fee 4.5 lakh /PA, and same csc AI & ML branch in Woxsen University 4.1 lakh/PA, also and he is getting only 30 % scholarship in Woxsen, and the faculty team said that after 3 years they have option for Abroad study, now the crusius time for deside, which college will be good for his course and which college among these is the best facilities, pls advice sir.
Ans: Rakesh Sir, VIT-AP’s CSE (AI & ML) program in Category 4 offers a strong placement record with over 90% of students placed, an average package of ?8 lakh, and more than 150 recruiters including Amazon, Microsoft, Deloitte, Infosys, and Capgemini, along with modern infrastructure, experienced PhD faculty, and a robust campus environment with 24/7 Wi-Fi, well-equipped labs, and comprehensive hostel and sports facilities. Woxsen University’s CSE (AI & ML) program, while slightly lower in annual fee (?4.1 lakh) and offering a 30% scholarship, is known for its industry-aligned curriculum, advanced AI & Robotics labs, and a rapidly growing placement record—average CTC grew by 19% in 2025, with top recruiters like KPMG, ThoughtWorks, and Centific, and strong international exposure through 170+ partner universities and options for study abroad after three years. Woxsen’s faculty includes global industry experts, the campus is modern and expansive, and the program is particularly focused on hands-on learning and global mobility, which is a unique advantage.

The recommendation is to prefer VIT-AP for its established placement record, larger recruiter base, and proven academic environment, especially if immediate placement and industry connections are the priority; Woxsen is a strong alternative if international exposure and a tech-driven, globally networked campus with study abroad options are more important for your son’s career goals. Which should I choose, Jadavpur University's Power Engineering or Calcutta University's CSE?
Ans: Jadavpur University’s Power Engineering is a highly respected, NBA-accredited interdisciplinary program ranked #12 in India, with a 90–97% placement rate, median package of ?8–10 lakh, and strong industry and research exposure in both electrical and mechanical domains, including practical power plant training and diverse recruiter interest—even IT companies hire from this branch. The department has a robust faculty, modern labs, and a vibrant campus culture, though infrastructure is basic and the curriculum could use updates. Calcutta University’s CSE is also a strong choice, with a competitive WBJEE cutoff (closing at rank 1,207 in 2023), a median package of ?10 lakh, and a 69–85% placement rate in recent years, but with a smaller intake (40 seats) and less consistent placement outcomes for core tech roles. Both universities offer extremely low fees and solid academic reputations, but Jadavpur’s Power Engineering stands out for its placement consistency, interdisciplinary flexibility, and national recognition, while Calcutta University CSE is preferable for those strictly targeting core software roles and are confident in their coding skills.

The recommendation is to choose Jadavpur University Power Engineering for its superior placement rate, interdisciplinary strengths, and national standing, unless you are deeply committed to a pure software career, in which case Calcutta University CSE is a strong alternative. My investment objective is to gift these (MF + Share) investments to my son and daughter after say 15 years. Please suggest your views on portfolios. With Thanks & Regards, S. Salvankar
Ans: You have done a wonderful job by staying disciplined with mutual fund investments for over a decade. A long-term equity investment, especially post-retirement, shows patience, understanding, and commitment. Your detailed summary shows thoughtful planning and systematic execution. Let me now assess your portfolio and investment approach from a 360-degree perspective, keeping in mind your future gifting goal.

Overall Portfolio Structure
Your investments are diversified across:

Equity mutual funds

Direct shares

Fixed income avenues like Bank FD, Post Office schemes, PPF, NPS

Pension income

Health insurance

You have a clear goal — to pass on your equity investments to your children after 15 years. This is a beautiful long-term wealth gifting intention. Your time horizon also aligns well with equity investing. However, there are a few areas where your strategy can be refined.

Mutual Fund Portfolio – Positives
You started investing early and have stayed invested for over 14 years.

Your corpus of Rs. 43.31L on Rs. 21.16L investment shows consistent and high-quality compounding.

An XIRR of 14.63% is an excellent achievement over this long horizon.

SIP of Rs. 55K/month at this age is bold and forward-looking.

You have spread your SIP across different fund categories.

This portfolio reflects long-term wealth-building behaviour and commitment.

Review of Your Current Equity Mutual Fund Portfolio
Let’s look at the structure of your mutual fund investments:

SBI Contra Regular

Strong long-term performer.

Investment since 2010, paused now.

XIRR of 17.4% is remarkable.

You have rightly held it for long, giving the fund time to deliver.

Parag Parikh Flexi Cap (Direct)

HDFC Balanced Advantage (Direct)

HDFC Retirement Saving (Direct)

Navi Nifty 50 Index (Direct)

Kotak Nifty Next 50 Index (Direct)

Motilal Oswal Nifty 500 Momentum 50 (Direct)

Motilal Oswal Mid Cap (Direct)

These SIPs show diversification across flexi-cap, hybrid, thematic, index, and mid-cap segments.

However, let me highlight a few critical areas for improvement.

Disadvantages of Direct Funds
You are investing in direct funds. But this may not be ideal, especially for retired investors.

Direct funds need regular performance tracking.

You miss personalised guidance from a Certified Financial Planner (CFP).

If the fund underperforms, you may not exit at the right time.

Asset allocation or rebalancing will not happen without expert help.

Retirement stage needs proactive reviews, not reactive responses.

Regular plans through an MFD-CFP come with professional oversight, tailored advice, and peace of mind. Over a 15-year period, right allocation matters more than a slightly lower expense ratio.

Index Funds in Your Portfolio – A Critical View
You have allocated part of your SIP to:

Navi Nifty 50 Index

Kotak Nifty Next 50 Index

Motilal Oswal Nifty 500 Momentum

While these funds seem low-cost, they lack active human intelligence.

Why Index Funds May Not Suit You:

Index funds blindly copy the index.

No flexibility to manage downside risk.

They cannot avoid overvalued stocks.

Momentum themes work only in certain phases.

Recovery in falling markets may take longer.

They are not suitable for legacy or wealth transfer goals.

You need funds that can manage volatility and aim for consistent returns. Actively managed funds with a good track record serve this better.

Portfolio Restructuring Recommendations
Based on your current scenario and gifting goal, here are my suggestions:

Switch From Index Funds
Gradually exit all index fund SIPs.

Redeploy this into actively managed flexi-cap and balanced advantage funds through a regular plan.

Select AMC schemes that have a consistent 10-year+ track record.

Pause Retirement-Specific Funds
HDFC Retirement Saving is tax-locked.

Once lock-in ends, consider shifting to a more suitable long-term fund.

Reduce the Number of Funds
Too many small SIPs lead to portfolio clutter.

Concentrate into 3 to 4 well-managed funds.

Ensure each fund has a distinct mandate — not overlapping in strategy.

SBI Contra Withdrawal Plan
You are planning to withdraw 10% of your SBI Contra corpus to realise long-term capital gains.

This is a wise move, considering tax implications.

MF Tax Rule You Should Note:
LTCG above Rs. 1.25L is taxed at 12.5% now.

You can withdraw up to Rs. 1.25L of gains every year, tax-free.

Systematically redeem in phases to avoid bulk taxation.

Redeploy these proceeds into flexi-cap or balanced advantage regular plans. This will keep the compounding cycle intact.

Direct Shares Holding
You have Rs. 3.3L in shares. Please consider:

Are these high-quality companies with stable track records?

Do you monitor and rebalance them?

If not, better to switch to diversified mutual funds.

A CFP can help review the stock portfolio.

Fixed Income Portfolio Assessment
You hold:

Rs. 40L in Bank FDs

Rs. 30L in Post Office Senior Citizen Savings Scheme

Rs. 4.5L in PO MIS

Rs. 15L in PPF

Rs. 10L in NPS

This is a conservative, capital-protected allocation, which is perfect at your age.

You are earning:

Rs. 28,000 monthly pension

Likely interest income of Rs. 4 to 5L annually

There is enough buffer to manage regular expenses, with no pressure on equity withdrawals.

Please ensure the following:

Stagger maturity of FDs to avoid reinvestment risk.

Reinvest matured PO schemes into safer debt funds or hybrid funds with moderate risk.

Do not add more money to NPS now. It will become illiquid and taxable on withdrawal.

Health Insurance Review
You have a health cover of Rs. 8L. Please ensure:

It includes critical illness cover.

It has cashless facility in your nearest hospital.

Policy continues till age 80+.

Premiums are paid on time.

If needed, explore super top-up policies to enhance coverage at a low cost.

Estate Planning and Gifting to Children
You plan to gift the entire mutual fund and stock corpus to your children after 15 years.

This is thoughtful and visionary. To do it smoothly, please:

Write a Will now, clearly assigning MF and stock assets.

Nominate your son and daughter correctly in each folio.

Keep them informed about your investments.

Review the Will every 3-4 years.

Maintain a simple tracker sheet with folio details, nominee names, and login info.

Also consider creating a trust, if you want to manage transfer gradually. A CFP can help you plan this smoothly.

Risk and Volatility Review
Even though you have 15+ years, equity markets remain volatile in short periods.

Please review your risk:

Avoid high exposure to mid-cap or momentum-based funds.

Stick to large-cap biased flexi-cap and balanced advantage funds.

Ensure debt-equity balance is maintained (ideally 30-35% in equity for now).

Review asset allocation annually with a CFP.

This approach will protect the wealth you are building for your children.

Action Plan Summary
Here is what you can do step-by-step:

Exit index funds gradually.

Stop direct fund SIPs and move to regular funds via CFP-guided MFDs.

Reduce mutual fund count and consolidate.

Withdraw small gains from SBI Contra yearly.

Pause fresh NPS investment.

Monitor health insurance coverage closely.

Nominate children and write a proper Will.

Maintain asset allocation of 65-70% debt, 30-35% equity.

Review portfolio every year.

Finally
Your portfolio reflects clarity and long-term vision.

But direct funds and index funds may hinder that vision.

Let a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) work with you, just like a family doctor. They’ll help protect and grow your wealth till the time you gift it.

Investing with expert review ensures peace of mind, emotional security, and legacy fulfilment.

You have built a solid base — now protect it with structure, consolidation, and clarity.

I got 96 percentile and 17820 rank (gen category) in KCET. Please tell me the name of all possible good colleges/universities except nit and iiit in which I can get Mechanical branch
Ans: According to 2025 cutoff trends, Mechanical Engineering in top private colleges like RV College of Engineering (RVCE), BMS College of Engineering (BMSCE), MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT), and PES University typically closes between 5,000 and 15,000, making these unlikely at your rank. However, you have strong chances at respected institutes such as Bangalore Institute of Technology (BIT), Siddaganga Institute of Technology (Tumkur), Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology (Bangalore), Acharya Institute of Technology, KLE Technological University (Hubli), Dayananda Sagar Academy of Technology, AMC Engineering College, SJB Institute of Technology, and Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology. These colleges have solid placement records, modern infrastructure, and experienced faculty, making them good choices for Mechanical Engineering.

The recommendation is to target Mechanical Engineering in colleges like BIT Bangalore, Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Acharya Institute of Technology, and KLE Technological University, as these are accessible at your rank and offer strong academic and placement support. All the BEST for the Admission & a Prosperous Future!
