I am an NRI getting around 60 Lakhs yearly interest on my NRE deposits which at present is tax free. When I become a Resident Indian then how much tax I would have to pay for the 60 Lakhs yearly interest.

Ans: When you become an Indian Citizen, you would be subject to TDS (Tax Deduction at source) provisions. Rate of TDS at present is 10% with valid PAN or 20% without PAN. However, this TDS shall be adjustable with your actual Income Tax Liability.
Income Tax Calculations depend on many factors & additional information, which is not available in your details. This info/factors would be Financial Year, Your Other Income from all other sources, Tax Savings-if any & Your age etc.etc.

Sir, I was a NRI for last 14 years and in June 2022 I permanently returned back to India after job contract finished and i qualified as RNOR for FY 2022-23, upon returning in June 2022 I closed all my NRE FD and opened resident FD. Is the interest earned upto June 2022 in NRE FD s are taxable as RNOR taxation?

Ans: Person cannot avail the exemption under section 10(4)(ii) of the Act and the NRE interest income earned for the entire year shall become taxable till the time the account is operational. Further, the taxable interest earned from the NRE account will be eligible for deduction of up to Rs 10,000 (for savings interest only), under section 80TTA and up to INR 50,000 (for senior citizens) under section 80TTB of the Act.

I am 76 year old NRI and have invested 60 lac rupees in NRE fixed deposits with SBI. Interest for these NRE FD is around 4.2 lac last year which is tax exempt. Am I required to file India income tax return to declare this income?
