My HBA1C is 5.5 ,fasting sugar is 91 and PP is 110 taking Metformin 500 twice a day .I was told earlier that I have pre diabetes,fasting was 115 and HBA1C was 6.4 . Should Metformin 500 be reduced to once in a day?

My age is 51 yrs . Recently I have been detected diabetes with HBA1C of 6.7..doctor has asked to take diabetic diet along with metformin 500 mg once daily.. should I need to take the medicine or life style change is sufficient to reduce to the blood sugar level..?

Ans: If this is the first time you are detected with Diabetes, then please give it a honest try in your lifestyle modifications for three months and repeat blood sugars
If controlled then there is no need to take medications

My age is 59 years. My Fasting blood sugar was 120 to 140, PPBS was 160 to 200, HbA1C was 6.4 to 7.00. At the time of my ankle surgery and after, I've been taking Metformin Hydrochloride Prolonged Released 500mg once a day for the last 10 months. With this medication, my FBS has been 126 to 142, PPBS 155 to 170, HbA1C 6 to 6.4. Should I discontinue and stop the above medicine ?

Ans: Hello. It is best to continue. You are still in the high prediabetic range per HBa1c and there is long term benefit to controlling the sugars tightly for another 10-15 years for you.

Hi. I'm 65 years young, non-smoker,weighing 92 kgs, height 175 cms, My HbA1c report dated 17/03/2024 is 7.5. ABG is 169. I'm advised by my physician to take Metformin IP 500mg twice a day for fifteen days. My Fasting Plasma Glucose 104.8 and PP is 90.9 (report dated 04/03/2024). Please comment.

Ans: You are overweight for your height. Ideal weight shoukd be in the range 75 kg. So please consider reducing your weight with certain dietary discipline. One most important one is early dinner by6pm

Ans: Metformin 500 alone in single dose may not be enough.
You might need either a combination with one more drug or atleast metformin 500 mg twice a day alongside modifications in lifestyle which includes physical activity and dietary changes.

If you have been detected newly on diabetes, there is every possibility that your diabetes can be go into remission and you can manage blood sugar levels without medications. However, you have to proactively and actively work on those aspects along with a doctor.
