Hi Doctor Could you please suggest a diet regime for a vegetarian with grade 2 non alcoholic fatty lever patient. The patient has undergone a kidney transplant surgery in 2014. The lipid profile is perfect but SGOT is slightly elevated. The Alkali phosphate and GGT is also evelavated. Blood protein is pm lower side. The patient has already lost around 7 kgs in last 7 months or so. Regards

Ans: The diet for Non alcoholic fatty liver condition includes fruits and vegetables especially leafy greens, high-fiber plants like legumes and whole grains like oatmeal. Restrain from foods and beverages including those high in added sugar, salt, refined carbohydrates, and saturated fat . Avoid alcohol. Antioxidants from garlic, turmeric, coffee, green tea, sunflower seeds and omega 3 oils will help protect your liver from damage. Focus on lowering your cholesterol levels, maintain ideal weight and adopt regular exercise.

Dear Komal, I have been diagnosed with a fatty liver. What diet and exercise should I follow to make my liver normal again? I am a non-vegetarian, sedentary. I have been told to stop drinking and smoking. Age is 35 years. Thank you for your help.

Fatty liver is a condition in which there is an increased build-up of fat in the liver and scarring of the tissue.

It is important to lose weight and increase physical activity.

Avoid refined carbs and include leafy greens -- they contain chlorophyll which helps cleanse toxins from the bloodstream.

Make sure your diet has enough MUFA (healthy fat) by including nuts and avocado.

Green tea and garlic work as excellent antioxidants.

Ensure your diet has enough high fibre and adequate protein, combined with high intensity workouts.

I had kidney cancer surgery on 23rd June, 75 % kidney was removed. Kindly advise about diet plans and precautions to be taken. I am diabetic as well.

Ans: Overall kidney function would determine your stage of kidney disease/ dysfunction if any. typically one good kidney is enough to maintain normal function. Diabetes, however, does cause kidney dysfunction and needs good control to prevent the same. Diet should be geared towards providing adequate calories for proper recovery and keep the carbs low so as to manage diabetes well. I would suggest discussing with your doctor regarding putting you on kidney protective medications which will also help control your sugars.

My total cholesterol has gone down to only 90. Due to this I am loosing weight. It has gone down by 8 kg during last 6 month. I need advice for a vegetarian diet for a diabetic person which will increase my both HDL and LDL, but will keep PP sugar level within limits.

Ans: HDL increase happens through Physical activity
Low LDL is good
You need to look at your diet if there are no gh quality fat like Oil seeds
Like Sunflower seeds, Pumpkin seeds and, Flax seeds
Make sure you have complex Carbohydrate sourced through Millet and no refined Carbohydrates like Maida, polished rice etc

I am 66, worked in sales marketing and warehouse management for over 30 years in Southern African. Retired a year back and came to India. After sitting home for a year found it very difficult, boaring and health loosing, again felt a strong desire in me to do some work, will prefer work from home or out, for 5-6 hrs, again enabling me to spend a health enjoyable and active life. Really feeling very difficult to find a job of my caliber and liking at this age in India. Pls advice
