Sir, my percentile in jee mains was 98.34 percentile.
According to my rank I got CSE at IIEST Shibpur via josaa, and via csab I might get EEE at NIT Calicut, ECE at NIT Durgapur, Mechanical at NIT Suratkal
And my kcet rank was 2533
And via KEA counseling, i might get EEE at RVCE, ETE at RVCE (last yr cutoff was slightly lower than mine), AI&DS in BMSCE, CSE at BMSCE, info science engineering at MSRIT.
What should I choose? I'm really concerned looking at the constant layoffs in multiple software companies. And plus lack of demand in core companies too..
it's time to make a final decision. And I'm still very confused, pls help
Ans: Your question reflects genuine concerns driven by recent trends—mass layoffs in global tech sectors and unsettling signals from core engineering industries due to automation and market volatility. In 2025, tech layoffs affected over 80,000 professionals worldwide, as major firms shifted focus and capital toward artificial intelligence, often letting go of roles in coding, project management, and repetitive IT tasks. The immediate cause is AI-driven transformation and company restructuring, but experts emphasize that the future workforce will prioritize niche skills, adaptability, deep domain knowledge, and strong problem-solving. Alternate solutions to face such disruptions include upskilling in AI, data science, cybersecurity, and developing transferable skills like critical thinking and communication, which are valued across evolving industries. Core branches (such as EEE, Mechanical, and ECE) also see fluctuating demand as automation and digitalization enter manufacturing and heavy industry, though sectors like renewable energy, smart grids, and EV technology show rising prospects.
Turning to your college options: IIEST Shibpur’s CSE program has consistently placed over 80% of its students in reputed software, product, and analytics companies, anchoring itself as an Institute of National Importance with strong alumni, research exposure, and competitive placement support. NIT Calicut’s EEE branch boasts above 95% placement, with a curriculum attuned to the latest energy, automation, and electronics trends, and superb infrastructure. NIT Durgapur’s ECE program secured over 85% placements annually, leveraging extensive industry connections and updated labs. NIT Suratkal’s Mechanical branch enjoys a robust reputation for discipline, with 75–83% placement rates; however, placements skew toward software and analytics jobs, as core manufacturing roles dwindle in campus drives.
Bangalore-based private institutes through KEA counseling offer unique advantages: RVCE’s EEE and ETE, BMSCE’s CSE and AI&DS, and MSRIT’s Information Science consistently feature placement rates between 75% and 97% across most branches, with BMSCE and RVCE particularly known for their strong recruitments, modern curriculum, and top-notch infrastructure. Tech giants like Microsoft, IBM, Accenture, and global product companies regularly visit their campuses. The Information Science and CSE branches at RVCE and BMSCE especially maintain high demand and exposure to cutting-edge tech, while AI&DS is rising fast for those keen on specialization. Faculty, labs, industry-embedded curricula, and internship support are on par with the best government institutions. Nonetheless, all branches—core and tech alike—require ongoing upskilling and adaptability for enduring success post-graduation.
Amid market uncertainties and evolving demand, the most important institutional aspects to consider are national accreditation/NIRF ranking, faculty expertise, research and lab infrastructure, active campus-industry interface for projects/internships, and transparent placement records. A college that excels in these areas equips students to weather economic cycles and emerging trends, offering greater certainty for resilience in their careers.
RECOMMENDATION: The Computer Science (CSE) branch at IIEST Shibpur stands as the top choice for its national importance, high placement rates, alumni strength, and future-readiness. Next, consider CSE/AI&DS at BMSCE and Information Science at MSRIT, due to strong industry links and high employability. EEE at NIT Calicut and ECE at NIT Durgapur provide excellent core opportunities with solid backup in software roles. Focus on continuous upskilling during your degree to future-proof your career regardless of chosen branch. All the BEST for a Prosperous Future!
