Sir, Good Afternoon. I am taking Voluntary Retirement on Jan2026 from Central Govt Service. I will get a monthly pension of Rs.50000. I will invest Rs.30 Lakh in SCSS scheme for getting monthly Rs.20500/-. I will also invest Rs.9 Lakh in POMIS for getting Rs.5250 monthly. I will also get Rs.8000/- as rent. These all adding my total income after retirement will be 83750. Sir my question is whether I have to pay income tax on this income. If i have to pay please advise how to save the tax.

Ans: Interest income and rental income is taxable as Income from other sources. Income from other sources is chargeable at slab rate and as per slab rate for FY 2025-26, there is NIL tax upto income of Rs.4,00,000. In addition to that eligible income get tax rebate upto 60,000.

I pay home rent also @ Rs 16000 per month from my pension. I have a TDS from pension amounting to Rs 40000/- in 2023 - 24. This year due to maturity of KVP I have income from other sources of Rs 4.1+ 40000+ 50000= Rs 5 lakhs. I already have paid 40000 as TDS, am paying 40000/- as advanced tax by 26 Mar 24. How much extra will be my tax liability for 2023-24? How can i save tax, please advice as i have no home loan, no health insurance etc.
Ans: Firstly, let me express my gratitude for your service to the nation as a retired Air Force veteran. Your dedication and sacrifice are truly commendable.

Evaluating Your Tax Liability
Pension Income and PPF Subscription
Your annual pension of 8 lakhs for FY 2023-24 is a significant source of income, subject to taxation.
The PPF subscription of 1.5 lakhs qualifies for deduction under Section 80C, reducing your taxable income.
Mutual Fund SIP and Other Sources of Income
The annual mutual fund SIP of 1.56 lakhs contributes to your investment portfolio but does not offer tax benefits.
Income from other sources, including the maturity of KVP and TDS, adds to your total taxable income.
Rent Payment and TDS
Paying home rent from your pension reduces your taxable income but does not qualify for tax deductions.
TDS from your pension and advanced tax payments are essential for compliance but may increase your tax liability.
Estimating Additional Tax Liability
Calculating Taxable Income
Deducting allowable exemptions and deductions from your total income will determine your taxable income.
Your tax liability will depend on the applicable tax slab rates for FY 2023-24.
Considering Tax Deductions
Exploring additional tax-saving avenues like Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS), Tax-saving Fixed Deposits (FDs), or National Pension System (NPS) contributions can help reduce your tax liability.
Tax-Saving Strategies
Leveraging Senior Citizen Benefits
As a senior citizen, you may benefit from higher tax exemption limits and additional tax-saving opportunities.
Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) and Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY) offer attractive interest rates and tax benefits.
Maximizing Section 80C Deductions
Utilize the full potential of Section 80C deductions by exploring eligible investments such as Tax-saving FDs, SCSS, and Equity Linked Savings Schemes (ELSS).
Assessing Health Insurance Benefits
While you mentioned no health insurance currently, consider investing in health insurance plans to avail tax benefits under Section 80D.
Conclusion
In summary, optimizing your tax planning strategy requires careful consideration of available deductions and investments aligned with your financial goals. By exploring tax-saving avenues like SCSS, Tax-saving FDs, and health insurance, you can effectively reduce your tax liability while securing your financial future.

Financial Planner, MF and Insurance Expert - Answered on Sep 17, 2025

Dear sir, I hope you are doing great. I am a pensioner (66 yr old). I want to plan income tax deductions for this current financial year. My total income (approximately) for the year would be: Pension (about 1.1 lakh per month): 14 Lakhs NPS Annuity (Rs 8040 per month): 1 lakhs Bank Interest on FD: about 50,000 Net gain on redeemed mutual funds: 2.5 lakhs (depending on the need, it may be more) This is the approximate income that I will have this year. Kindly advise me (i) How much income tax I should be paying? Approximately. (ii) Is there a way to pay income tax from net banking? (iii) Will it be helpful to my income tax if I donate some (about Rs 10000) to a charitable society under section 80 G where there is a 50% IT exemption? Please enlighten me on this. Kindly help me in advance in planning the budget for this small income to make the best use of the deductions. Gratefully yours for your advice, Yogendra
Ans: Hi Sir,

You can choose the new tax regime from next year and pay comparatively less taxes. Doing investments to save tax is not a good idea.
As per your income discussed, tax will have to be paid and there is no way to save that.
You can pay income tax using net banking or upi or card while filing your ITR.
Donating u/s 80G under new tax regime is not applicable.

For you, choosing new regime is better as it will have less tax for you to pay. You will have to pay 1.4 lakhs less tax in new tax regime for FY 2025-26. Total tax paybale - 97500

Physiotherapist - Answered on Jun 13, 2026

I have asked this question 3 weeks ago and still no response. Please can someone address this. Hi health expert, I have been struggling with severe health anxiety for many years now. I am currently in my mid-40s and I think this started after a traumatic experience around 10–12 years ago. We had gone on a family vacation and shortly after returning my uncle fell seriously ill. After diagnosis we found out he had advanced stage cancer and we lost him within a few months. The shock of that experience affected me deeply and ever since then I have lived with an intense fear of cancer and serious illness. Even small things like a stomach ache, a pimple, swelling, fever, or any unusual sensation trigger extreme fear in me. I immediately start thinking the worst and it causes sleepless nights and constant worry. This has seriously affected my quality of life. Along with the anxiety, my OCD symptoms also become very intense during these phases. It feels like there’s a voice in my head constantly telling me to perform certain rituals like praying immediately, drinking water at a specific moment, not switching off the AC, or doing random actions “or else” something bad will happen. It becomes mentally exhausting, and at times I struggle to function normally in my daily routine. I have consulted several psychiatrists and psychologists over the years, but I still feel unhappy and stuck. I am reaching out here to ask if anyone has experienced something similar or found anything that genuinely helped whether coping techniques, home remedies, calming practices, or anything else that brought some peace and stability. Basically I am looking for some home remedy and also want to check is this something rare or they are people who goi through this.
Ans: Dear Sir/ Madam. Thank you for reaching out. I am responding as Physiotherapist which is allied health care professional and not as core medical professional. As a physiotherapist, I want you to know that what you're experiencing is not rare many people live with this cycle of health anxiety ..A simple but powerful home remedy is diaphragmatic breathing: inhale slowly for 4 seconds, hold for 2, exhale for 6 seconds, repeating for 5–10 minutes whenever a trigger arises. Progressive muscle relaxation (tensing and releasing each muscle group from toes to head) can also calm your nervous system and break the urge to perform rituals. Gentle, mindful walking outdoors for 15–20 minutes daily helps ground you in physical sensations rather than fearful thoughts. I strongly recommend to also visit a Psychiatrist as well as clinical psychologist specializing in exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy, which is highly effective for health anxiety. Additionally, consult family physician to rule out any underlying medical issues, which may ease your fears. Keep taking small steps. I wish you quick recovery
