Hello doctor I had total cholesterol around 270 and HDL 80 and LDL around 175 with normal tryglecirides. It's been like this since years . I am quite active and daily walk 4 kms. I am 65 years now. My doctor wants me to start statins but I would prefer to avoid. I am following a healthy lifestyle but my cholesterol levels don't get controlled. Should I start statins. And if I do is it ok to discontinue on e the levels become normal.

Ans: First thing you should do to modify lifestyle. reduce free sugars from your meals and reduce carbohydrates.
Increase physical activity.
Your LDL levels are high and the lifestyle modification alone may not help. Therefore, starting on Statin is a good idea.

Yes, over period of time when cholesterol returns to normal, it is possible to stop statin or reduce the doses.

Hi, i am 45 years old and my Cholesterol level were at 240 and doctor suggested to start taking Statin 5mg daily. I am taking this for past 9 months now. Kindly advise if there is any side effects of continuing it. My cholesterol levels are normal for past 6-7 months.

Ans: Cholesterol can be regulated through diet too. Particularly early dinner by 6 pm and avoid junk foods and outside food which might have palm oil as cooking base. Once your cholesterol is normal check with a Nutritionist for a balanced diet and start regular work outs. Statin breaks down the muscle protein too so one will have fatigue, cramps and aches. So consider not to take it for long periods

My total cholesterol is 254 and LDL is 178. Triglyceride 128. I feel pain in my foot and burning sensation often. Also kind of pain in the nerves near knee to thigh area whenever I stretch. Should I take statin tablets?

Ans: Pain in your foot and burning sensation could be due to impaired Glucose tolerance.Please check your Sugar levels in your blood

Ans: Old NITS are hundreds times better than new IITS.IIIT is a relatively new concept.Prefer good NITs.For NITs you need a decent percentile in JEE MAIN.
