My son is studying 9th CBSE . Tamilnadu. He is average students he is very interested about astro physics. Just I joined him JEE. We need further guidance

Please ask him to focus more on the foundation classes of JEE. For astrophysics, please visit the websites of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) or the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) for more details. To excel more, try to explore more about the following examinations: (1) National Standard Examination in Astronomy (NSEA) (2) Indian National Astronomy Olympiad (INAO) (3) International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) (4) National Astronomy & Science Olympiad (NASO). These exams are related to space science. Astrophysics is also related to space. Hence both are mutually associated. The IITs provide opportunities to study and research astronomy and astrophysics, they are not specifically dedicated to these fields.

There can be two ways either with B.Tech or B.S Course.
B.Tech in Engineering Physics / Electrical / Mechanical / Computer Science
Followed by an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Astrophysics
Recommended if he also has an interest in technology, instrumentation, or computational astrophysics.

B.Sc. in Physics / Astrophysics
Followed by M.Sc. Physics / Astrophysics
Ph.D. in Astrophysics
Recommended if he is deeply interested in theoretical physics and cosmology.

IISc Bangalore – BS (Research) in Physics, followed by M.Sc./Ph.D.

Gud morning My son is currently in 9th standard and in a ICSE board syllabus school. He aspires to study Astro Physics which i believe this course is available in IIT Kanpur. I have 2 questions 1. From which class should start preparation for JEE. 2. After his 10 th Standard should be shift to CBSE or State Board Syllabus for better scoring in 12 th STD. Pls note my son is bright student and he gets good ranks.

Here are my recommendations for your son's JEE preparation: (1) He can start early from Class 9 if coaching fees are affordable until Class 12 (2) If not feasible, he can join affordable online JEE classes until Class 10, then switch to regular coaching (integrated/weekday/weekend) for Classes 11-12 (3) Please make sure that he minimizes travel time to the extent possible by choosing nearby coaching centers (4) Even if continuing ICSE until Class 10, son must ensure thorough NCERT coverage from Class 9 onwards (5) Consider switching to CBSE by Class 11, as most engineering entrance exams align with CBSE-NCERT syllabus (6) I've shared detailed a lot of JEE strategies on RediffGURU platform and also on my YouTube channel (@EduJob360) – please review when convenient. Ans: You have not mentioned your son's home state. Given his rank, securing a CSE seat in NITs may be challenging, but admission to ECE in some NITs and CSE/IT/ECE in several IIITs is more realistic, especially during the later JoSAA and CSAB rounds. Consider applying to IIIT Una, IIIT Kottayam, IIIT Dharwad, IIIT Kalyani, IIIT Bhagalpur, IIIT Raichur, IIIT Manipur, and IIIT Agartala. For ECE, newer and mid-tier NITs and IIITs are good options. The CSAB special rounds are crucial as they fill vacant seats after JoSAA. Ans: Admission to top NITS/IIITs seems unlikely. You can try lower-ranked govt colleges/IIITs or state colleges for CSE, or consider other branches in NITs via CSAB.

You can consider applying to IIIT Kurnool, IIIT Manipur, IIIT Dharwad, IIIT Raichur, IIIT Bhagalpur, IIIT Kalyani, and various GFTIs. Through JoSAA/CSAB, fill IIIT Una, IIIT Sonepat, IIIT Kalyani, IIIT Bhagalpur, IIIT Manipur, IIIT Raichur, IIIT Dharwad, but CSE/ECE may mostly depend on CSAB vacancy movement. You must have backup options of JAC Chandigarh, HSTES Haryana, Punjab colleges, IPU Delhi, Private Universities, and State counselling. Ans: Chances with South NITs are slim. You may try for lower branches in lower NITs. Yet the chances are on the borderline. Better to keep an alternative option open.

NIT Warangal Mechanical may be difficult in regular JoSAA, as recent HS Open Mechanical closing ranks were around 15k–17k in early 2025 rounds and around 15k in 2024 Round 1. Better Mechanical options: NIT Calicut, NIT Rourkela, NIT Durgapur, NIT Patna, NIT Raipur, MANIT Bhopal, VNIT Nagpur, NIT Jalandhar, NIT Silchar, plus CSAB round. Also consider NIT Warangal Metallurgy/Chemical/Civil. dditionally, please review the JoSAA opening and closing ranks from the last 2-3 years to gain further insights and better understand admission trends.
