You can broadly target NITs like Agartala, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry for branches such as Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Production, Metallurgy, Biotechnology, or similar lower-demand options. Admission to CSE or ECE branches in NITs and most IIITs is unlikely at this rank. It is highly recommended to register for CSAB Special Rounds as well, and to keep 4-5 backup options ready from reputed private engineering colleges in and around your state, rather than relying solely on JoSAA or CSAB counseling for admission. Admission to CSE in older or more established IIITs like IIIT Allahabad, Gwalior, Jabalpur, and Lucknow may be challenging. Getting into NIT CSE is unlikely except possibly at very new or lower-ranked NITs through CSAB. Ans: Based on recent JoSAA trends, admission to ECE at VNIT is difficult, but Electrical Engineering is borderline and possible in later rounds, while Mechanical Engineering is a realistic option. In 2025, the closing rank for VNIT HS Female EEE was around 20,146, and in 2024, it was approximately 21,087; Mechanical usually closes at even higher ranks, so she should consider it a strong option. The recommended preference order is VNIT ECE, followed by VNIT EEE, then VNIT Mechanical, and next NITs like Bhopal, Surat, Raipur, Jalandhar, and Patna for Mechanical or Electrical branches, along with newer NITs for ECE or EEE. She should fill IIIT options only if she is open to ECE or CSE-related branches, as IIITs generally offer limited core branches. Participation in CSAB rounds is also advisable since it publishes separate special-round closing ranks for vacant seats. Ans: Saraswathi Madm, With a CRL of 1,67,450 in the General category, female, and Karnataka HS background, admission to NIT Surathkal is not realistic, even in the last rounds of JoSAA or CSAB counseling. Recent female closing ranks for Karnataka HS Open category were significantly lower, with Chemical around 22,991, Civil between 34,886 and 39,258, and Mining/Metallurgy approximately 24,000 to 39,455, nowhere near 1.67 lakh. Although CSAB counseling may create some movement, it also uses All India CRL ranks, and NITK seats rarely go as high as 1.67 lakh for the General category. Therefore, it is highly advisable to consider backup options through KCET or COMEDK at reputable colleges such as BMSCE, MSRIT, RVCE, PES, NIE Mysuru, JSSATE, DSCE, BNMIT, CMRIT, and RNSIT, as well as private institutions like Manipal, NITTE, Dayanand Sagar, and RUAS. For example, the last round cut-off for DTU MnC in 2025 was around 8,348 CRL for General category, with CSE and IT branches having even higher demand. IIIT Delhi’s CSAM and CSE programs also have competitive cut-offs, benefiting from Delhi quota and bonus-point systems. It is recommended to apply through JAC Delhi but keep realistic backup options such as ECE, EE, or Mechanical branches at DTU or NSUT, as well as institutes like IGDTUW, IPU colleges, NIT Delhi lower branches, Jaypee Noida, Thapar, LNMIIT, Manipal, VIT, and SRM to ensure good admission prospects.
