Hi Mam, My daughter just completed XII Com from CBSE and scored 98.7%. She has also scored good in CUET. I am in dilemma either to go for BA(Hons) Economics from DU or B.Com (hons) from DU. She is ready to go for CAT or CA as well. Personally, I feel she should go for BA(Hons) Eco and then either UPSC or CAT for a good IIM. Pl advise.
Ans: Hi Sir,

Thank you for writing in.

Congratulations on the success of your daughter.

I would suggest please speak to your daughter and understand her interest. At the end, she is the one who is going put efforts, patience, interest and build her career. Hence, it's important you buy in her consensus.

Here, you are referring to two different career paths and both has relevant expertise as per the choices you make. Below I have given the brief for your reference.

If you choose BA (Hons) Economics -

If you are interested in a career in the civil services, particularly aiming for the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) exam, a BA in Economics could be relevant. Economics is one of the optional subjects in the UPSC exam, and having a background in this subject could give you an advantage in that aspect of the exam. However, keep in mind that the UPSC exam is highly competitive, and success in the exam depends on many factors, including hard work, dedication, and a comprehensive understanding of various subjects and current affairs. Hence checking the interest of your daughter is of utmost important.

On the other hand, if you are considering pursuing an MBA from an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) by taking the CAT (Common Admission Test), the choice of your undergraduate degree is less crucial. IIMs consider the CAT score, past academic performance, work experience, and performance in the interview/GD (Group Discussion) round when evaluating candidates. While an economics background could be helpful in developing analytical and quantitative skills required for the CAT, many successful MBA candidates come from diverse academic backgrounds.

If you choose B.com (Hons) -

If you are interested in a career in the civil services and want to appear for the UPSC exam, a BCom (Hons) degree can provide a solid foundation for the General Studies paper in the UPSC examination. BCom (Hons) covers various subjects related to commerce, economics, finance, and accounting, which can be beneficial for certain topics in the UPSC syllabus.

Similarly, if you are considering pursuing an MBA from an IIM through the CAT exam, a BCom (Hons) degree can be a good choice. BCom (Hons) graduates often possess strong analytical and quantitative skills, which are valuable for success in the CAT exam. Additionally, the IIMs appreciate diversity in academic backgrounds, and BCom (Hons) would add to that diversity.

As mentioned, with any career decision, it's essential to assess your daughter's interests, strengths, and long-term goals. Both paths, UPSC and CAT, require Commitment, Dedication and Hard work. You should research further on both the career options, possibly talk to professionals in each field who have achieved in their respective fields. Take time to explore both options thoroughly and choose the path that aligns best with your daughter's aspirations and ambitions.

Hope this help's. All the best

My daughter is studying Engineering and she is thinking of going abroad for MS or MBA in reputed college. we all could not decide, which will course be better. Can you suggest?
Ans: Hello,

First and foremost, thank you for contacting us. Your daughter’s career ambitions and passions play a key role in her decision to pursue either a Master of Science (MS) in Engineering or a Master of Business Administration (MBA). While both offer unique benefits, she should make a choice based on her personal goals and the path she intends taking. Mentioned below is an overview of both courses to help make an educated choice:

Master of Science (MS) in Engineering:

1. Technical Know-how: Technical skills and knowledge within a certain engineering discipline are boosted through an MS in Engineering degree. If your daughter wishes to acquire a better understanding of a specific area of engineering and undertake cutting-edge research or development initiatives, pursuing this degree is an excellent choice.

2. Research Possibilities: Research projects, most often being a component of MS programs, they can result in publications and a chance to support modern developments in this area.

3. Concentration: Pursuing an MS program allows one to specialize in a particular engineering discipline, which in turn, can help her acquire expertise in a specific subject.

4. Job Roles: MS in Engineering graduates generally pursue technical positions viz., that of a design engineer, technical specialist, or research engineer.

Master of Business Administration (MBA):

1. Leadership and Management Abilities: Pursuing an MBA program enables one to develop business understanding, leadership abilities, and comprehensive knowledge of different business functions. This proves invaluable for one with an interest in leadership and management positions.

2. Adaptability: An MBA is adaptable with applications in not just engineering but a variety of sectors. If your daughter is thinking of a career in management, consulting, entrepreneurship, or any position that demands a solid background in business, pursuing an MBA is a good choice.

3. Collaboration: With MBA programs often placing a strong emphasis on networking, applicants are provided with opportunities to connect with experts from varied backgrounds and businesses.

4. Entrepreneurship: Pursuing an MBA degree can equip your daughter with the requisite knowledge and abilities required to succeed in the corporate world, if she plans on establishing her own company.

Factors viz., your daughter’s hobbies and interests, future aspirations, long-term career plans, abilities and strengths, and monetary concerns should be taken into account in order for her to make a confirmed choice.

Finally, the choice should depend on your daughter’s personal goals and vigour. Getting in touch with experts in both engineering and business to acquire information about their experiences and seeking advice mighet also prove beneficial.

I am 65 years old and have history of sleeplessness and on tranquilizers. about two years back, it got so bad that one night I wanted to end it all. fortunately my wife was around and calmed me down. We saw a psychiatrist the next day and she put me on anti depressants. Since then I am sleeping well. But the fear is I feel I will not sleep without medication. Is it okay to take this medication life long. Is there a way I can go to sleep without medication like everybody else? allthough I am a diabetic my general health is good as I take part in endurance running and related activities.
Ans: Dear Anonymous,
You need medicines to sleep and now you worry that without that you worry that you won't sleep. That's how these medicines can be...make you dependent on them...
The better choice will be to grow out of them...any kind of dependence of anything or anyone is never healthy.
Speak with your doctor and state that you do not want to be dependent on medicines for something as natural as sleep...He/She will suggest ways to wean you off from the medicines and also hoping that they put you on some holistic treatment like meditation or other any alternative therapies that are known to eliminate the source of sleeplessness in you.
Be patient with this line of treatment as it will take time to identify the root of the problem but once it is found, it becomes easy to treat it once and for all hopefully taking you off medicines fully someday.
Kindly explore this option as this will help you to take charge of your life and sleep as well.

All the best!

my husband died when my son is12.5yrs. he was fond ofcricket and after my sons birth he trained him my son is now 15 he is spineer and play verywell. secondly after my son sbirth he always with my son because he left job and taken vrs. i m single mother now. my son didnot cry cry when he dead nor whenever i talked withhim he didnot want to discuss about him . he irritate. and never from his side he talked about his papa. why i didnot understand. and what to do so that he will talk about his papa. iknow he has verygood memories with him he alawys pamper my son when he was alive. suggest what to do
Ans: Dear Shobha,
I am truly sorry for your loss...Loss of a loved one is one of the toughest phases in anyone's life!
Also, you must understand that each of us have a different way of dealing and coping with loss. Your son possibly feels more comfortable masking his sadness and not talking about how much he misses having his father around. Since you say that he has good memories of his father, spend time with him not discussing his father but actually playing on those memories and keeping those happy memories alive. Since, they bonded over cricket, talk more about that with him and how his father would have been proud of him now. Someday, when he is ready to talk about his father, he will...give him time and replay the good times as a family and especially cricket with his father.
The only time you need to be concerned is when he starts to show any signs of withdrawal from life in general...since you haven't mentioned this, I assume that your son is fine and is just not willing to discuss his father. Let him be...each of us process grief differently. Just bond with him as a caring mother that you are...that will keep him safe and stable.

All the best!
