my sister is having some psychiatric issue (has illusions of some relatives talking with her - mind voice) and got treated with medicines for about 2 months. 99% they all stopped now. some thing is still left in mind. she refuses to take medicines telling that she is ok and others not Ok and they only need to take medicines. how to make her take medicines. she is having knowledge of medicines and one can not cheat her telling that these medicines are only vitamins eic.

Ans: Dear Anonymous,
Were the medicines stopped by the doctor who prescribed them? If yes, go back to the doctor as things have not cleared out as yet for the medicines to be stopped.
If it was stopped based on self-diagnosis, it can be dangerous...Please do not stop or start any medication based on internet knowledge. Kindly take her to a doctor who will prescribe the right medicine in the right dosage; he/she will also guide the family members on how to manage when your sister refuses to take her medicines.
This requires immediate attention; kindly go and see a Doctor who can make a proper diagnosis if not done as yet.

All the best!

my sister refuses to visit the doctor( whom she visited earlier) as she says that only others need to go to doctor. she does not want to visit doctor nor take medicines. she fights with other brothers and sisters on this matter.
Ans: Dear Anonymous,
There is no option. The fact that she says that others need a doctor and not her could truly mean a reality distortion provided what you have shared about her is accurate.
Kindly do not medicate her yourself. It is dangerous and the consequences are not something that any of the family members may want to face.
Find a way to take her to a doctor please.

All the best!

Hello Dr. Anu, my younger sister (now 43) had epilepsy since she was 13 years of age. After several years of depression and epilepsy, with regular medication from neurolgist, she does not have occurance since last 8-10 years. Now the only medicine she take is Thyronorm 75. She is engaged in household work and does it diligently. However, she has lower confidence and does only as directed or taught. I need guidance from you from the perspective of her intellectual growth. When I ask her what she want to do for her future, she is blank. How can I help her? Are there counsellors in Mumbai who can coach and mentor for her growth. Please advise and also suggest how to go forward.
Ans: Dear Jayesh,
It's wonderful to hear that your sister is doing well now.
There are amazing coaches and counsellors in Mumbai who can mentor your sister on how to create a future for herself.
You can either search for an expert in this domain, over the Internet or go by recommendations within the family and friends' circle.
- Once you choose an expert, do make sure that you have a meeting/call with the expert in order to make aware of the situation at hand.
- Make sure that the expert is someone who can handle the situation with patience and also can enable your sister to take her own decisions through the process.
- Ensure that there is complete confidentiality through the process.
- Discuss fees or the amount to be paid for sessions right at the beginning.
- On your part, give the expert enough time to work with your sister without any interference which will enable the expert guide your sister appropriately.

All the best!
