Dear Kanchan, my boss is asking me to show my offer letter so he can bargain and get me the same package in the current company. Is this fair? What should I do?

Ans: Dear Anonymous,
It's understandable to feel conflicted in this situation. While it's not uncommon for employers to ask for proof of an offer to negotiate, it can also put you in a difficult position. Check your offer letter for any clauses regarding confidentiality. If there are none, you may have the right to keep the details private.Consider how sharing the offer might affect your current job. If your boss knows you're considering other offers, it could change the dynamic of your current role. If you're open to staying with your current company, you could use the offer as leverage in negotiations without sharing the specific details. You could mention that you have a competitive offer and would like to discuss a counteroffer. Ultimately, the decision to share your offer letter is yours. If you're uncomfortable doing so, you can politely decline and focus on negotiating based on your value to the company.
It might also be helpful to seek advice from a trusted colleague or mentor who can provide additional perspective based on your specific circumstances.
