Can I switch careers to IT with a BSc in Chemistry?

Dr Dipankar Dutta is an associate professor in the computer science and engineering department at the University Institute of Technology, the University of Burdwan, West Bengal.
He has 27 years of experience and his interests include AI, data science, machine learning, pattern recognition, deep learning and evolutionary computation.
Aside from his responsibilities at the college, he also delivers lectures and conducts webinars.
Dr Dipankar has published 25 papers in international journals, written book chapters, attended conferences, served as a board observer for WBJEE (West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination) exams and as a counsellor for engineering college admissions in West Bengal. He helps students choose the right college and stream for undergraduate, masters and PhD programmes.
A senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (SMIEEE), he holds a bachelor's degree in engineering from the Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College and a an MTech degree in computer technology from Jadavpur University.

Sir,My son is in last year BSc chemistry, now he wants to change his stream to IT, Certificate course in minor computer science at IIT mandi and then certificate course in cloud computing at IIT will going to help him to get the good job in IT sector or is there any other way to enter into IT sector from non IT background.. Please advice Sir

Ans: He will not get a good job just by doing some certificate program. Many universities are now floating masters programs for non it background students. Like Upgrad, IIT Madras, BITS Pilany etc. He should do those programs

Ans: Happy to help Raju. Do let me know if your son has finished BSc Chemistry, If he is pursuing BSc, which year is he in. Let him speak to his College faculty to check if he can switch to a BCA program. Simultaneously explore if IITs offer any programs in Comp Science or Cloud Computing for BSc pass. Share more details and I may be able to make further suggestions

For that he plan to pursue certificate course at IIT mandi in minor computer science, then certificate course in cloud computing at IIT. Will this certificate course will help him to get the good job in IT sector? Or is there any other way to enter into IT sector for non IT background student?

Ans: Good question. Yes, this certificate course will definitely help him to get a good job in IT sector. One more certificate course is must. That is for AI and ML. He will surely succeed. Only B.
