Money
I have recently relocated to India after 40 years in the US. I have my American passport, OCI card, ePAN and my American drivers license. I also have the ownership documents to a flat in Anantapur, AP where I now live. I also have NRE and NRO bank accounts. Other than these I do not have any documents what so ever. I now find that I cannot do anything without an Aadhaar number. I can't get a SIM card, I can't get a credit card, I can't even get a cooking gas connection! And I can't get Aadhaar because I do not have proof of address. The property tax and electricity account are in the name of the former owners. The NRE/NRO accounts have my former US address. It is a huge Catch-22 situation: I can't get this because I don't have that, and I can't get that because I don't have this. How do I obtain all the necessary documents so that I can start living like a normal person!
Ans: You already have several important documents. You can resolve this situation step by step without depending entirely on Aadhaar.

– Address Proof: Visit the Anantapur municipal office with your registered property deed. Ask how to transfer the property tax records into your name.

– Aadhaar: Once you meet the residency eligibility requirements, visit an authorised Aadhaar enrolment centre with your American passport, OCI card and accepted address proof. Confirm the current document requirements before visiting.

– Bank Accounts: Ask your NRE/NRO bank to update your Indian residential address and check which documents it accepts.

– SIM, LPG and Credit Card: Contact the respective service providers and request their KYC requirements for OCI holders. Aadhaar is not the only acceptable document for every service.

» Final Insights

Start with updating your property records and establishing Indian address proof. This should help you move forward with the remaining applications. You do not need to solve every documentation issue at once.
