Hi Dr Nidhi, two weeks ago I fell in the bathroom and sprained my ankle. The pain subsided in two days but yesterday again, I started experiencing pain. Could it be a fracture? Should I get a scan?

Ans: Dear Anonymous,
This could either be a ligament sprain in the ankle or a fracture.
If you are able to move your ankle in all directions and walk most likely it is a ligament sprain and not a fracture.
Please do icing for 20 minutes 4 times a day and rest it out as much as possible for next 2 days. If after 2 days pain is still there then please show either an orthopedic or a physiotherapist. They may need to give you medication or the physiotherapist may need to do techniques like taping, Ultrasound and certain ankle exercises. Once they check you they guide you whether you need any further investigation. X-ray is needed if they suspect a fracture and MRI or CT scan of ankle is needed if they are suspecting a ligament issue.
All the best for your recovery.
