Career

My son has recently passed his HSC examination from the Commerce stream with Mathematics, securing 89%. He is keen to build a career as a Quantitative Analyst and we are currently exploring the best academic path for him. We came across the B.Sc. (Actuarial Science and Quantitative Finance) program offered by Patkar Varde College, affiliated with Mumbai University and conducted in association with IAQS. From our understanding, this is a 3-year undergraduate degree awarded by the University of Mumbai , and the program is designed in collaboration with IAQS, which specializes in actuarial and quantitative studies . However, we would like your expert guidance on the following: Is this course fully recognized and valuable for long-term career growth? Will this degree be accepted for pursuing higher studies abroad (such as MSc in Quant Finance, Financial Engineering, etc.)? How does this course compare with a traditional B.Sc. in Mathematics, Statistics, or Economics from reputed colleges? Could you please suggest some of the best colleges or alternative courses in India for pursuing a career in Quantitative Finance? We want to ensure that he chooses the right path with strong academic value and future opportunities. Looking forward to your guidance.

Ans: Actuarial Science is a good field provided you are interested in Stats. Just find out if your son is interested in Stats. If he is then he can take the course and do separate professional course on Acturial Science. What course he should do in graduation would depend on his interest. If he is interested in Quant Finance, he can do BSc in Math or in Finance and then look for Quant Fin option during post graduation
