Hi Dr Karan. I was admitted to a fully-funded PhD programme at a US university, but my F1 visa was denied under 214(b). I had all documents, strong academic scores, and even an assistantship. I don't understand what I did wrong. Can someone explain what factors influence F1 visa approval in 2025?

Ans: Hi, I understand how upsetting this can be—especially after all the hard work to get into a fully-funded PhD.
A 214(b) refusal usually means the visa officer wasn't convinced you'll return to your home country after your studies. It's not always about your documents or academics—they may have had doubts about your ties to your home country, family situation, or future plans.
Even with a funded PhD, they look at how clearly you explain your long-term goals and how well you connect them to returning home (or not staying in the U.S. permanently right away). Sometimes, it's just how your answers come across during the short interview.
You can reapply—many students do get approved on a second attempt. Just make sure you're clear, confident, and prepared to explain your intent to return home after your studies. Let me know if you want help with that.
