Hi, my son did his batchlers this year in CS from Arizona State University as an international student. His plan is to complete his OPT of 3 years and then do masters but looking at current job market it seems difficult to get OPT. What you suggest?

Ans: Hello,

To begin with, thank you for contacting us. I am happy to hear that your son has completed his Bachelor’s from Arizona State University (ASU) and plans to complete his Optional Practical Training (OPT) before pursuing his Master’s degree. To answer your question first, I would like to tell you that especially considering the uncertainties surrounding OPT options, navigating the labor market as an overseas student might be difficult. While the situation may feel overwhelming, you will be glad to know that in order to improve his chances, a number of proactive initiatives can be taken by your son. Firstly, he could look into internships in order to acquire hands-on experience and form relationships within the industry. Next, bear in mind that networking is also essential. Your son can find undiscovered job openings and develop valuable relationships by interacting with alumni, using websites viz., LinkedIn, and participating in career fairs. Not just that, his employability can also be enhanced by keeping up with market dynamics and obtaining in-demand skills via certifications or online courses. Lastly, I would also recommend that your son takes into account alternative pathways viz., earning a Master’s degree in an associated field or looks into employment prospects in industries that have a high demand for tech skills, as they may provide feasible alternatives in light of the current difficulties.
