Career

I am 50yrs old software pro with around 20yrs of experience. Please advice some career option so that i could learn new technologies like cyber security or block chain and earn at the same time. Or advice me about some short duration training where i could learn while learning.

Ans: As a software professional with decades of experience you are best equipped to see the emergence of new technologies. And am sure you 20 year career has made you learn new technologies. To the list picked by you--Cybersecurity, Block Chain-- I would add Networking, AI and ML. Pick the areas that will be of most use in your own place of work. And you would benefit by picking up Project Management skills to lead large teams. Look for courses on Coursera, TED Talks. I would also not hesitate to ask some of your younger colleagues who have joined the software industry in the past 5 years.

Hi Sir, I am 45 years of age. I have done my MBA in marketing and systems(2001) and diploma in web centric technology i. I have worked in Pharma sector for 14 years in sales. Post that i worked as sales manger& Purchase manager in a hospital. Later for 5 years i was doing my own business. Currently i am working as Operations Manager in an IT startup. I am also given a supervisory role as testing team supervisor due to some knowledge of software testing. Please suggest a skill which i should learn for good earning which should be relevant for next 10-20 years. I am ready to learn and i am quick learner. Please suggest skills where i can do free lancing as i do not wish to do job any more.

Ans: Dear Friend , Many like you suffer from mid career crisis due to various avoidable or unavoidable reasons . since you have spent good Number of Years In pharma and hospital sectors , both having rewarding job prospects , I wish , you get back to pharma or hospital sector as a Sr manager . Only thing I wish to suggest , you prefer an established house rather than start ups at this age. IT start ups can be risky option. Getting back to sales and administration or Purchase in pharma will be easy . Acquiring New skills sets or doing new courses in logistics /purchase or inventory management could be ok, provided you can wait for your new job. Thanks
