Dear Roopashree,
I have two cases where I need your help.
1. My daughter, who is 16 years old, was a state level swimmer until two years ago.
At that time, her diet and exercises were at a very different level.
She suddenly decided to quit swimming. This led to weight gain and she became 60 kg; her height is 5.2 feet.
She then started some exercises, watching YouTube, etc, and went into self-starvation mode in order to reduce weight.
We didn’t realise that she started throwing food. It continued for months while she doubled her exercise to twice a day.
As a result she not only lost 15 kg in a year, but it also stopped her periods for a year now.
Can you help us with this problem?
2. For myself, I am 44 years old, height 5 feet, weight 60 kg and a big belly.
I like to eat spicy food so maintaining just soup based diets becomes difficult beyond a day or two.
Can you guide me on what diet programme I should follow to reduce 7 kg in next five months?
I have a family occasion coming up in Feb 2022, for which I want to be ready.
Shalini Shukla

Ans:

Let me tackle this individually.

Let’s look at your daughter first.

We often define health by weight. While it is certainly an important factor, body functions -- whether hormonal, digestive and/or nervous -- are equally, if not more, important.

Given the major shifts in your daughter's routine, both during her swimming days and workout days, her body must be going through a lot. And let’s not forget the hormonal changes happening during this age.

I would suggest that she takes a mental break from thinking about diet and exercise for at least 2-3 months.

This does not mean she should overeat and not do basic physical exercises. Instead, opt for a balanced diet (lots of fruits and less of grains and processed foods).

Include a little physical activity (not workouts) but more playful activities. Light walks or basic jogging, yoga or any other sport of her choice like badminton, etc, will keep the body remain active without stressing the hormones.

She can also start basic pranayama (deep breathing exercises) to balance her energies and lower stress levels.

As far as her menstrual issues are concerned, I would suggest you meet an ayurvedic practitioner. They will identify if there is any possible imbalance of the elements and recommend ayurvedic medicines if required.

Shalini, let’s look at your concerns now.

A big belly can be due to many reasons -- excess fat retention, water retention, bloating, etc.

You should focus on addressing the root cause and not on weight loss through strict dieting.

I suggest you follow some basic principles of food intake, starting with a detox for your stomach.

Have a glass of petha (white pumpkin) juice (recipe here) in the morning. Avoid eating anything else for an hour. Do this for a month.

Avoid fried food and restrict non-veg and heavily processed foods during this period.

You can eat a full meal, but avoid eating after sunset.

Spices can be therapeutic as well as harmful, depending upon consumption.

If you practice yoga, then do Kapalbhati pranayam for 5-10 minutes in the morning.

Half an hour after your meals, go for a stroll.

I have gotten a seat at VIT Vellore in IT branch in cat 5. I also have a seat at NMIMS mumbai in CSE Data science. My COMEDK rank is 8348 which means I can get CSE in Dayanad sagar and Jss college in Bangalore and electrical in BMS college of engineering and in Ramaiah Institute of Technology, which choice is advisable
Ans: With COMEDK rank 8348, you have excellent prospects across multiple prestigious engineering institutions offering distinctly different career trajectories and placement outcomes. VIT Vellore IT demonstrates moderate placement performance with over 50% campus placements, highest package of 60 LPA, and average CTC around 12 LPA, supported by top recruiters including Bank of America and TCS Digital. The Category 5 fee structure amounts to approximately ?5 lakhs annually. NMIMS Mumbai CSE Data Science shows varied placement statistics with BTech achieving 62.4% placement rate in 2024, median package of ?7.70 LPA, though specific CSE Data Science branch statistics remain limited. COMEDK options present superior alternatives with your rank 8348 securing admission to Dayananda Sagar College Engineering CSE (cutoff 5873 in 2024) achieving 67.86% placement rate with 249 companies visiting, JSS Academy Bangalore CSE (cutoff range 11017-40173) demonstrating 73.2% placement rate with median package ?6.5 LPA, BMS College Engineering Electrical (cutoff 9150) maintaining 62% overall placement rate with median package ?9 LPA, and Ramaiah Institute Technology Electrical (cutoff 36441) showing 75% placement rate with median package ?8 LPA. Recommendation: Choose Dayananda Sagar College Engineering CSE for superior placement consistency, strong industry connections, optimal COMEDK rank utilization, and excellent career prospects in core computer science domain over other alternatives. All the BEST for the Admission & a Prosperous Future!

Career
Hi Sir, With a JEE adv rank of 20561, my son could get Mech in Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE), Vizag. He has a KCET rank of 3935 which might fetch him a ECE in PESIT. As he has no branch preference, which do you think is a better option for future?
Ans: With JEE Advanced rank 20561 and KCET rank 3935, your son has excellent prospects at both IIPE Vizag Mechanical Engineering and PESIT ECE, but they offer distinctly different career trajectories and placement outcomes. IIPE Vizag demonstrates exceptional placement performance with 97.87% placement rate, 93.75% placement rate in 2024, and 96% in 2023, supported by top PSU recruiters including ONGC, HPCL, IOCL, GAIL, and Schlumberger. The institute holds NIRF ranking #201-300 in Engineering category 2024, with strong focus on petroleum and energy sector providing specialized career opportunities in core engineering roles. PESIT (PES University) shows strong placement consistency with 83% BTech placement rate in 2023, 87% in 2022, and median package trends showing consistent improvement from INR 7.30 LPA to INR 8 LPA between 2021-2023. With KCET rank 3935, ECE admission is viable as the expected cutoff ranges between 3000-3200 for general category. PESIT maintains superior NIRF ranking #101-150 in Engineering category with over 350 companies participating in placements including Amazon, Microsoft, Intel, and Deloitte. However, IIPE's specialized focus on energy sector provides better core engineering opportunities and higher placement consistency, while PESIT offers broader IT sector exposure but with more competition. Recommendation: Choose IIPE Vizag Mechanical Engineering for superior placement consistency, specialized energy sector focus, strong PSU connections, and better core engineering career prospects despite PESIT's higher institutional ranking. All the BEST for the Admission & a Prosperous Future!
