Hello Dr, my daughter is 12 years old and she just got her first periods 5 days back . She is 142 cms and I am extremely worried for her height. Me and my wife are short. I am 5 feet 5 inches and my wife is 5 feet 1. So we understand that she will be short but can we expect her to grow to my wifes height? Please advise if we can give her any medicines or nutritional products. Thankyou

Ans: Her final height depends on genetic and external factors like diet and activities. Based on her growth velocity till now, her pediatrician will be able to give you an estimated height. Once puberty sets in, the growth plates at the end of long bones start fusing so growth usually stops in 2 years. Ensure has a balanced diet with good protein intake, an active lifestyle with at least 1 sport.

My daughter age 7 year complete but her weight is 14.100 kgs and thin body, we have used lots of vitamins medicine, but not so effective. Her family doctor said that don't worry, nothing issue,

Ans: If her birth weight was low and her weight gain has always been slow along with a below normal height then she may need hormonal evaluation eg thyroid hormone , growth hormone. A pediatric
endocrinologist will be able to guide you in this.
Ensure a good protein intake along with carbohydrates.

Jai Hind Madam, My daughter got her first menstrual cycle this year. Will she gain height after her first periods. what changes she need to bring in her life style to keep healthy and gain height.

Ans: There is a growth spurt arround puberty which slows down after the periods start. An active lifestyle with aerobic exercises, swimming, cycling, sport will increase final height by a couple of inches. She needs to have a healthy diet with green leafy vegetables, eggs, meat, nuts with reduced processed foods or junk foods

Ans: If she has reached puberty more than 3 years ago then the chance of growth now is poor. Treatment can be offered before puberty sets in
