My son, who got 95 percentile and no hope in jee advanced, Is thinking to take a drop year. Is it really needed?

Ans: Rahul Sir, With a 95 percentile in JEE Main and no qualifying score in JEE Advanced, your son faces a common crossroads. Taking a drop year can be beneficial if he is motivated and disciplined to improve his understanding and performance, especially since JEE Advanced requires clearing minimum cutoffs (about 35% aggregate marks) and strong problem-solving skills. A focused drop year often helps students significantly improve ranks and secure admission into IITs. However, the decision should consider his mental readiness, support system, and willingness to commit to rigorous preparation. Alternatively, he can accept admission in reputed NITs, IIITs, or GFTIs through JEE Main counselling, which offer good education and placements, and attempt JEE Advanced again while studying. This dual approach reduces risk and keeps options open. Recommendation: If your son is motivated and ready for disciplined preparation, a drop year is advisable to improve JEE Advanced rank and chances for IIT admission. Otherwise, secure a good seat through JEE Main counselling and plan to attempt JEE Advanced again alongside studies. This balanced strategy ensures academic progress and future opportunities. All the best for your son's admission and a bright future!
