Nayagam Sir, My son CRL rank 54907 (96.51 Percentile), in JEE 2026. Open category, HS TN. No branch preference. Please suggest good NIT/IIIT or alternative private colleges. Is it advisable to wait till CSAB counselling?

Ans: Vinod Sir, With a CRL of 54,907 in the Open category and Tamil Nadu home-state quota, NIT Trichy is unlikely through JoSAA. Even lower-demand home-state branches such as Civil, Metallurgy, and Production have usually closed much earlier in recent rounds. For reference, in NIT Trichy 2025, HS Open CSE closed around 4,463, and Civil/Metallurgy/Production were also well below 54,907.

More realistic JoSAA/CSAB targets would be NIT Puducherry, NIT Andhra Pradesh, NIT Meghalaya, NIT Manipur, NIT Mizoram, NIT Nagaland, and NIT Arunachal Pradesh for branches like Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, EEE, or Production. A few GFTIs and newer IIITs may also be possible, but CSE/IT will be difficult at this rank.

Yes, it is better to wait for and participate in CSAB, but do not rely on it alone. Your son can also participate in TNEA counselling, but getting into reputed colleges may be difficult, especially if your son is from a non-Tamil Nadu school board (CBSE/ICSE/IB) and has lower cutoff marks. It is highly advisable to keep strong backup options in private colleges such as SSN, SASTRA, Amrita, VIT, SRM, Shiv Nadar Chennai, Sathyabama, and Saveetha. Ans: Bhanu, Yes, NIT Warangal Mechanical is possible, but not fully guaranteed. Still, you must fill this choice. With Telangana home-state quota, you have a good chance in the later JoSAA rounds and an even better chance through CSAB if seats remain. Still, fill choices carefully and keep strong backups such as NIT Andhra Pradesh, Raipur, Patna, Jalandhar, Hamirpur, Silchar, Durgapur, Bhopal, and Goa for Mechanical, Chemical, or Metallurgy.

Also keep IIITs, GFTIs, and TS EAMCET colleges as safety options. Ans: Sona, With a CRL of 41,120, General male category, and Delhi home state, admission to NIT Delhi for CSE is unlikely, and ECE is also difficult in early JoSAA rounds. Recent closing ranks at NIT Delhi for CSE and ECE have been significantly better—2023 HS ECE closed around 21,529, with Mechanical and Civil closing even lower. Nonetheless, it’s worth filling these choices too. For CSE, chances improve in newer IIITs during later JoSAA or CSAB rounds, such as IIIT Manipur, IIIT Kalyani, IIIT Dharwad, IIIT Kurnool, and IIIT Bhagalpur. For ECE, consider IIIT Una, IIIT Kottayam, IIIT Bhopal, and other newer IIITs depending on round-wise seat movement. Still you can try. Recent cutoff trends indicate that USICT and MAIT CSE typically require much better ranks—for example, MAIT’s 2023 final CSE cutoff was around 54,287 for all-India unreserved candidates, and BPIT’s 2025 outside-Delhi CSE cutoff was approximately 58,557 in one reported round. You can consider targeting BVCOE for CSE/IT, BPIT for IT/CSE-DS, ADGITM for CSE/IT, GTBIT for CSE/IT, and also participate in spot or sliding rounds. Ans: Vinit, Getting AI, Data Science, or Data Analytics branches in NITs or IIITs through early JoSAA rounds is highly unlikely. Recent JoSAA data shows that AI/DS-type branches in IIITs close much earlier—for example, IIIT Dharwad’s Data Science & AI closed around 39,025 CRL in 2025, and IIITDM Kurnool’s AI & DS closed near 35,178 CRL in the open category. For Haryana home state, NIT Kurukshetra may offer admission to lower-preference branches in later rounds, but AI or Data Science is not realistic at this rank. Besides JoSAA, you can try CSAB Special Rounds, but it’s important to keep expectations flexible. As backup options, consider branches like ECE, Mechanical, Civil, or Production in NITs and GFTIs, or apply to colleges such as YMCA Faridabad, UIET Kurukshetra, DCRUST Murthal, Chandigarh University, LPU, and private institutions like Manipal, SRM, or VIT Northern India campuses for CSE or AI-related branches. He said ,I take decision and make it right. Higher studies , Research, Ph.D for teaching are other options . Yes UPSC or other Govt jobs are not bad either.
