Hello mentors! I had a doubt regarding same year improvement exam acceptance in BITS. I am falling short of only one mark in a single subject and 3% less of pcm aggregate to fulfill the requirement. I would be appearing for the improvement exam this year itself, and would like to know if I can reserve a seat during counselling rounds until iteration? Since my revised marksheet (ISC BOARD) would be available by the last week of july. If not, then I would really appreciate some alternative solutions that would allow me to pursue my further studies in BITS in the same year.

Ans: For a physics-oriented student not keen on CSE, the best branches are: Engineering Physics, Electrical/Electronics, Mechanical, Aerospace, Materials/Metallurgical, Energy Engineering, and Instrumentation. JoSAA’s official seat matrix includes Engineering Physics, Physics-integrated courses, Materials, VLSI, Mechanical and related programmes across IIT/NIT/GFTI options. In IITs, target Engineering Physics only if JEE Advanced rank is strong; otherwise, consider Mechanical/Materials/Electrical in newer IITs. In NITs, at around the 96.34 percentile, top NIT Physics-related branches may be tough, but Mechanical, Electrical, ECE, Metallurgy, Production, and instrumentation in mid/lower NITs or GFTIs may be realistic through JoSAA/CSAB. If possible, it is advisable to have the following backups: IISER BS-MS, B.Sc. Physics at DU/HCU/BHU, or private options like Shiv Nadar/Ashoka for physics. Ans: Chances are, you will get ECE/EE/Mechanical/Chemical in mid-tier NITs, and possibly CSE in newer NITs. Your best strategy is to focus fully on JEE Advanced and the second attempt at BITSAT, because IITs or BITS Pilani/Goa/Hyderabad (especially Circuital branches) would be significantly better long-term options than joining VIT or settling early for lower NIT branches.

Ans: Chances of CSE are very slim to nil. However, ECE may still be possible in Categories 4–5, depending on the counselling round and seat availability. It is better to have an alternative ready as a backup.
