Hi Expert, my son is currently in Grade 8 and I would like him to start preparing for the Math Olympiad. Could you please suggest how he should begin his preparation?

Ans: Sure. Grade 8 is a great time to start.
Here’s how your son can begin his Math Olympiad journey:
1. Build Strong Basics – Ensure his school math (especially algebra, number theory, geometry, and combinatorics) is crystal clear.
2. Start with Books – Begin with books like:
o Challenge and Thrill of Pre-College Mathematics
o Math Olympiad Contest Problems by George Lenchner
o Problem-Solving Strategies by Arthur Engel (for later stages)
3. Join a Foundation Course – Look for a reliable Olympiad training program—like RMO Foundation Courses offered by institutes like Cheenta, Vidyamandir, or Pi Circles.
4. Practice Regularly – Encourage daily problem-solving—focus on logic, puzzles, and Olympiad-type problems, not just formulas.
5. Appear for Pre-RMO – That’s the first official step in the Olympiad ladder. It usually starts from Grade 8 or 9.
6. Stay Consistent – Don’t rush. Let him enjoy math and develop deep thinking. Olympiads are not about speed, but depth.
Support him emotionally too—it’s a long but rewarding journey.
