Left job at age 50 after 16 years of service in November 2022. Has not withdrawn EPF since the government provides interest on the balance for 36 months. Planning to withdraw on/after November 2025. Q1. Is the interest earned from November 2022 to November 2025 taxable? Q2. If it is taxable, should the entire interest earned over this period (November 2022 - November 2025) be reported in the Income Tax return for FY 2025-26? Q3. If taxable, should the 36 months Interest to be added under ‘Income from Other Sources’ and categorized as 'EPF withdrawal interest'?" and the rest of the principal amount (the amount while you were in job) which are TAX FREE goes in Exempted income.

Ans: Hello;

1. Answer to your first question is YES. Interest earned on non contributory EPF account is taxable.

2. Yes entire interest earned over 3 year period needs to be reported.

3. Your understanding is correct however it is advisable to seek a CA's advice to avoid Income Tax Deptt. queries later on.

Best wishes;

Hi Sir, Greetings! I worked in the company for 22 years. I resigned and moved to abroad for better opportunity. Currently my is 50 years and not withdrawn my EPF. I have the following query. 1. When can I withdraw my full EPF? 2. Upto what age I can earn interest on my EPF? 3. Tax on EPF interest.
Ans: Congratulations on your new opportunity abroad. It's great to see you're planning your EPF withdrawal wisely. Let's address your queries in detail.

When Can You Withdraw Your Full EPF?
You can withdraw your EPF under certain conditions:

Retirement: Full EPF withdrawal is allowed at the age of 58.

Unemployment: If you are unemployed for more than two months, you can withdraw your EPF.

Early Withdrawals
Partial Withdrawal: You can partially withdraw for specific reasons like home purchase, marriage, or education.

After 50: Since you are 50, you can withdraw up to 90% of your EPF one year before your retirement.

Upto What Age Can You Earn Interest on Your EPF?
Your EPF account earns interest until you withdraw the amount. However, there are important points to consider:

Active Accounts: As long as you are contributing, your EPF account remains active and earns interest.

Inactive Accounts: If there are no contributions for three years, your account becomes inactive.

Interest on Inactive Accounts
Interest Continuation: Even if your account is inactive, it continues to earn interest until the age of 58.

Post 58: After 58, interest is credited only if you have not withdrawn the EPF balance.

Tax on EPF Interest
Understanding the tax implications on EPF interest is crucial:

Exempted Interest: Interest earned on EPF is tax-free if you complete five continuous years of service.

Pre-Mature Withdrawal: If you withdraw before completing five years, interest is taxable.

Taxation on Withdrawals
After 5 Years: Withdrawals after five years are tax-free.

Before 5 Years: Taxable as per your income slab, and TDS is deducted if the amount exceeds Rs 50,000.

Analytical Insights
Full EPF Withdrawal at Retirement
Withdrawing EPF at 58 ensures you benefit from tax-free interest. Your funds continue to grow, providing a substantial retirement corpus.

Managing Inactive EPF Accounts
It's wise to keep track of your EPF account even if it's inactive. Ensure your KYC details are updated to avoid any complications during withdrawal.

Tax Planning
Consider tax implications before withdrawing your EPF. Plan withdrawals strategically to minimise tax liability.

Benefits of Regular Monitoring
Regularly monitor your EPF account to ensure it's earning interest. Update your bank details and KYC to avoid any issues during withdrawal.

Conclusion
By understanding when to withdraw your EPF, the interest it earns, and the tax implications, you can make informed decisions. Regular monitoring and strategic planning will help you maximise your EPF benefits.

My daughter has cleared JEE Advanced and secured a seat at IIT Guwahati in Biosciences and Bioengineering. She also has offers from LNMIIT Jaipur (ECE) and Thapar University Patiala (AI & Data Science). We are confused whether to prioritize the college (IIT brand) or the branch, considering long-term career prospects, growth opportunities, and future flexibility. What would be the more wise choice among these three options for her overall career development ?
Ans: IIT Guwahati’s B.Tech in Biosciences and Bioengineering combines life-science fundamentals with core engineering through courses in biochemical engineering, computational biology, tissue engineering, and nanobiotechnology, supported by 36 PhD-qualified faculty, multidisciplinary labs (biomechanics, biosensors, and cancer biology), and collaborations with AIIMS and NIPER Guwahati. Its graduates achieved an 85% average placement consistency over the past three years with roles in R&D, biotech and pharma, alongside strong research?internship pathways and ISRO-led biotechnology projects. LNMIIT Jaipur’s ECE offers a focused electronics curriculum spanning RF/microwave, VLSI and wireless communications, delivered on a 100-acre residential campus with NAAC ‘A’ accreditation, NBA approval and industry-linked laboratories, backed by consistent branch-wise placements of around 80–90% and a vibrant women’s hostel and mentorship cell to support female engineers. Thapar University’s four-year B.E. in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, launched in partnership with NVIDIA, provides over 227 petaflops of GPU infrastructure, AI-driven microcredentials, interdisciplinary electives across engineering and liberal arts, and a Centre of Excellence with the University of Queensland, though as a nascent programme its placement track record is emerging and scholarship support is limited.

Recommendation: Prioritize IIT Guwahati’s Biosciences & Bioengineering for its established research ecosystem, strong 85% placement consistency, and interdisciplinary exposure. Next, choose LNMIIT Jaipur ECE for robust accreditation, dedicated female support mechanisms and proven 80–90% placements. Finally, consider Thapar’s AI & Data Science for cutting-edge AI infrastructure and global collaborations, accepting its evolving placement profile. All the BEST for Admission & a Prosperous Future!

My daughter is in tenth grade kindly guide for how she can get into b des courses in NID or IIT. Which entrances exams are needed and can she take humanities in Hsc. Is maths required to crack the entrances. What is the difficulty of maths
Ans: Aspiring designers must clear national-level entrance tests: the NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT) for B.Des at NID Ahmedabad, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Assam, and the Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design (UCEED) for the B.Des programme at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee and IIITDM Jabalpur. Eligibility for both requires completion (or appearing) of 10+2 from any stream—science, commerce, humanities or arts—with a minimum of 50% aggregate (45% for OBC-NCL, 40% for SC/ST/PwD) and adherence to age limits (for general category born on/after 1 July 2004). Humanities students are fully eligible, and mathematics at HSC is not mandatory; however, UCEED Part A includes a Numerical Answer Type section testing basic arithmetic, geometry and number sense—questions range from easy to moderate difficulty, with occasional tricky spatial-reasoning items, while MCQs demand analytical thinking and negative marking in MSQ/MCQ sections. UCEED Part B evaluates drawing and design aptitude over one hour, featuring two questions that assess creativity and visualization. The exam totals 300 marks over three hours, blending computer-based and pen-and-paper formats. Top-ranked institutes for B.Des (NIRF Design) are NID Ahmedabad, NID Bhopal, IIT Bombay (IDC), IIT Delhi (Design), NID Andhra Pradesh and NID Haryana. Preparation strategies include: studying the official DAT and UCEED syllabi, practicing previous years’ design-thinking and sketching tasks, strengthening visual-spatial skills, revising basic mathematics concepts through mock NAT questions, time-management drills and enrolling in portfolio-enhancement workshops.

Recommendation: Encourage early familiarization with DAT and UCEED patterns, regular sketching practice, targeted drills on UCEED’s easy-to-moderate math questions without assuming advanced math, and aiming for top NIRF-ranked NID or IIT design schools by strengthening creativity, logical reasoning and speed under timed conditions. All the BEST for Admission & a Prosperous Future!

I am a bank employee hoping for a career transition. Is it possible to do a phd at 40 years age from iit or iisc. I am really passionate about scientific research and got distinction in my graduation.
Ans: Institutes of National Importance such as IISc Bangalore and the IITs welcome motivated candidates across a broad age range, with no upper-age ceiling for regular full-time PhD admissions provided you meet the academic and examination criteria. You must hold a qualifying degree (Master’s in Science/Engineering or a four-year bachelor’s with ≥ 60–65%/6.5 CPI) and a valid national-level test score (GATE, CSIR-UGC-NET JRF, DBT-JRF, etc.). Applications open annually (August session) and mid-year (January session at IISc) with deadlines typically in October–November for regular and March–April for sponsored/external programmes. As a bank employee without a formal R&D appointment, you would apply under the regular category at IITs (self-financed) or IISc, engaging in full-time research on campus. Alternatively, IISc’s External Registration Programme permits professionals in recognized R&D organizations to pursue a PhD part-time up to age 50, but banks do not qualify under its sponsorship criteria. Across IITs, several institutes offer part-time or sponsored schemes for employees of government, PSUs or accredited industries, often requiring two years’ post-qualification experience, a “No Objection” certificate and minimal on-campus residency. Admission is based on written tests and interviews, and self-financed candidates are equally assessed but fund their own fellowships.

Recommendation: Commit to preparing for and clearing GATE or CSIR-UGC-NET, secure a research supervisor at your target department, and plan for a full-time offshore PhD at IISc or an IIT. If full-time study is impractical, explore IITs’ part-time schemes under sponsored or self-financed categories, ensuring you fulfill residential and sponsorship requirements. All the BEST for Admission & a Prosperous Future!
