IS IT RETURN NECESSARY FOR DEMISED PERSON

Ans: If there is income above taxable limit, shares, property being inherited by legal heirs, it is always advisable to file return of income for demised person.

What are the tax implications after an account holder dies without filing IT returns?

Ans: If a person dies, the legal heir has to file tax returns on behalf of the deceased, to report the income earned by the deceased until the date of his death, and taxes deducted thereon. Legal heir needs to register oneself on the income tax website for filing the return on behalf of deceased. This is mandatory for e-filing of return on behalf of the deceased person.

The PAN of both the deceased person and legal heir should be registered in the e-filing portal. However, if the deceased person’s PAN is not registered, then the legal heir can register on behalf of the deceased.

Once the request for registration as legal heir is approved, then the person can file return as legal heir on behalf of deceased.

Any income earned after the date of death from the assets inherited from the deceased is taxable in the hands of the legal heir. This would mean that in the year that the person died, the income for the year would need to be segregated between the return of the deceased and the legal heir.

Legal heir should include this income inherited from the deceased in her/his own income while filing own income tax return

Hello Hardik Sir, , Once again thanks for your prompt reply. I had contacted a CA but unfortunately I could not get the proper advice or clarity i wanted. so I want to understand if following solution can also be considered . We file the return of deceased as per the 26AS so that there is no problem in getting TDS refund as the total income of deceased is less than the taxable limit. But while filling my return I include all interest earned after the date of death of deceased in my income and clearly mentioning this with proper remarks under heading "income from other sources" in my ITR .

Ans: Hello,

I understand your concern and it's great that you're thinking about this in detail. Based on the information available, any income earned after the date of death from the assets inherited from the deceased is taxable in the hands of the legal heir.

So, if you're the legal heir, you should include this income inherited from the deceased in your own income while filing your own income tax return. This is in line with your proposed solution of including all interest earned after the date of death of the deceased in your income and mentioning it under the heading "income from other sources" in your ITR.

However, it's always a good idea to consult with a tax advisor or a chartered accountant to understand the specific implications based on your individual circumstances.

Ans: Hello,
According to me a retirement corpus should be 100% liquid and can be used whenever required and generating a return of 2-3% more than the inflation of the country.
Post office NSC, PPF and FD don't beat the inflation and hence not a good option
You can select different categories of funds to make a diversified portfolio that generates higher returns with low volatility and you can start SWP as and when you plan to retire
Selection of funds may play an important role if you go through this route, so kindly consult before you take any steps in this direction

Ans: Based on your son's score, chances of admission to NIT Trichy CSE/ECE are extremely low, and even lower branches may be difficult due to the high cutoffs at NIT Trichy. Admission to IIITs for CSE/ECE through regular JoSAA rounds is also challenging, but it is advisable to try CSAB Special Round for newer IIITs and GFTIs. Consider options like IIIT Agartala, IIIT Manipur, IIIT Kalyani, IIIT Bhagalpur, IIIT Ranchi, Assam University, Gurukula Kangri, and BIT Mesra off-campuses, provided you and your son are mentally prepared for these campuses. Additionally, it is recommended to have 5–6 backup options in reputed private engineering colleges apart from participating in TNEA counselling, such as SSN, SNU, Sastra, Amrita, VIT, Sathyabhama, Saveetha and also some other reputed Private Engineering Colleges based on your/son's preferred locations within Tamil Nadu, instead of relying only on JoSAA. Sir. My daughter 92.76 percentile in female OBC candidate. Nit Trichy home state. Any nit or iit in any branches are possible sir.

Ans: IIT is not possible unless she qualifies strongly in JEE Advanced, but she may have a chance at lower/core branches in some NITs and possibly newer/lower-demand branches, depending on her category rank and counselling trends. Chances with NIT-Trichy are very slim.

Ans: Slim chances at top NITs/IIITs. Try newer/lower NITs/IIITs. Keep a backup option of a good private college. Final chances depend heavily on his OBC rank, home state, and JoSAA cutoffs.

With a CRL rank of 22,000, an OBC-NCL rank of 5,983, and Andhra Pradesh home state status, you have good chances of admission in NIT Andhra Pradesh, especially in ECE and EEE branches, while CSE remains borderline depending on the 2026 cutoff trends. Recent data shows that NIT Andhra Pradesh CSE closes around OBC-HS ranks of 5,100–5,500, making your rank slightly risky but still worth attempting; ECE looks more realistic. Admission to CSE/ECE in top NITs like Trichy, Warangal, and Surathkal through other-state quota may be difficult. Good options to fill include NIT Andhra Pradesh (CSE/ECE/EEE), IIIT Sri City, IIIT Kottayam, IIIT Nagpur, IIIT Una, IIIT Bhopal, IIIT Ranchi, and GFTIs. Sir please clarify are iiit better then iit non core for cse?

Ans: For a student focused specifically on software/tech careers, the top IIITs can be better than lower-demand non-core branches at many IITs, but the premier IIT brand/network still outweighs most IIITs unless the IIT branch is a very poor fit for the student’s interests.

Hi, My son has secured a rank of 4320 (CRL) in JEE Mains 2026. Home State is not an option. Can you suggest Institute + Branch preferences that we should opt?

Ans: Try ECE at top NITs (Trichy/Warangal/Surathkal/Calicut/Rourkela) and IIIT Allahabad IT/ECE, IIIT Gwalior CSE/IT, MNNIT Allahabad ECE/EE, and MNIT Jaipur ECE/EE, followed by strong fallback options in ECE/EE/CSE at mid-tier NITs/IIITs. However, keep a close eye on the closing ranks of previous years for more accurate predictions, which will be useful when filling the preference order.

Ans: Taking a drop does not guarantee success. If you can take the risk and have full confidence that he can crack the exam with the required percentile, then tell him to proceed with a drop.

At Thapar, consider CSE/COE > AI/ML/Data Science > ECE > Electrical > Mechanical/Civil, based on his genuine interest and aptitude.

Ans: Your son has a strong chance of getting into either top NITs or top IIITs. Try with NIT Warangal/Surathkal/Trichy CSE if available, then NIT Rourkela/Calicut/MNIT Jaipur/MNNIT Allahabad CSE, followed by top NIT ECE/AI/DS branches as backups

Sir, My son got 94.45percentile Jeemains, Mahindra CSE seat blocked, BITS 220marks Session 1, Manipal 148 marks and board 90%. He is interested in CSE or Maths and physics. What shall we do?

Ans: Kishore Sir, you have not mentioned your son's home state. However, please note that BITS typically requires a minimum of 240–250 marks even for MSc programs and above 290–320 for BE programs, especially for the CSE branch. Based on your son's scores, admission to NIT/IIIT CSE through JoSAA appears difficult; some newer IIITs and GFTIs may be possible through CSAB, mainly in lower-demand branches. Please keep Mahindra-CSE as a safe backup option. Regarding Manipal, MIT Manipal CSE is tough to get, but Mathematics & Computing or other CS-related branches may be borderline—last year’s CSE closing rank was near 5129 and Maths & Computing near 5633. MIT Bengaluru offers better chances for CSE/ECE, with the 2025 CSE closing rank around 11,331. Manipal Jaipur and SMIT Sikkim have very good chances for CSE, ECE, and AI-DS branches. Preference order could be MIT Manipal (Maths & Computing/CS specializations) → MIT Bengaluru (CSE/ECE) → Manipal Jaipur (CSE) → SMIT (CSE). If possible & if you/your son desire, have Thapar also as one of the backup options. Physics is a better option mainly for research-oriented goals; for his interests, CSE or Maths & Computing would be preferable unless he is strongly inclined toward research.
