EPF- What happens to EPF on moving to abroad or leaving service permanently and no longer contributing to EPF after nearly 15 years of service and accumulation? Would I continue to get interest even after 3 years if I do not withdraw? Are there any restrictions?

Ans: Hello;

After 3 consecutive years of no contribution, except interest, EPF account becomes inoperative and technically shouldn't accrue interest.

But EPFO has a current policy to pay interest on all accounts, includes inoperative accounts too, till member age of 58.

Best wishes;

Hi, I have a EPF balance which I have not withdrawn after relocating abroad about 2 years back. I plan to be back in India after 5 to 6 years and also do not want to withdraw EPF if it continuous to accrue interest till I withdraw or retirement age. Can I know if there are any restrictions of interest accrual for inactive PF accounts i.e. where contributions are no longer made? Any other things I need to be aware of to make a decision to withdraw or not?
Ans: It's great to see that you're thinking ahead about your EPF balance and its implications for your future financial planning. Let's address your concerns and provide some guidance on the matter:

Understanding EPF Inactivity:

When you relocate abroad or cease to be employed, your EPF account becomes inactive, meaning no further contributions are made.
However, the balance in your EPF account continues to earn interest until you either withdraw it or reach retirement age.
Impact of Inactivity on Interest Accrual:

The EPF balance in your inactive account will continue to accrue interest, albeit at a lower rate compared to active accounts.
While the exact interest rate may vary depending on economic conditions and government policies, your EPF balance will still grow over time.
Factors to Consider Before Withdrawing EPF:

Withdrawal of EPF balance before retirement age may have tax implications, depending on the duration of the account and the reason for withdrawal.
If you plan to return to India and resume employment, leaving your EPF balance untouched allows it to grow further and provide a larger corpus for your retirement.
However, if you anticipate financial needs or investment opportunities abroad, withdrawing your EPF balance may be necessary, considering factors such as tax implications, currency conversion, and investment alternatives.
Other Considerations:

Evaluate the potential returns and benefits of keeping your EPF balance invested compared to alternative investment options available abroad.
Consider consulting a tax advisor or financial planner to assess the tax implications of EPF withdrawal and explore strategies to minimize tax liabilities.
Keep track of changes in EPF regulations and policies, as they may impact the interest rate, withdrawal rules, and taxation in the future.
Encouragement:

It's commendable that you're proactively considering the implications of your EPF balance on your future financial well-being.
By staying informed and making well-thought-out decisions, you can maximize the growth potential of your EPF balance and secure a comfortable retirement.
In summary, while your EPF account remains inactive, your balance will continue to accrue interest, albeit at a lower rate. Consider factors such as tax implications, investment opportunities, and future financial needs before making a decision to withdraw or retain your EPF balance.

Best wishes for your future financial endeavors!

Hi Sir, Greetings! I worked in the company for 22 years. I resigned and moved to abroad for better opportunity. Currently my is 50 years and not withdrawn my EPF. I have the following query. 1. When can I withdraw my full EPF? 2. Upto what age I can earn interest on my EPF? 3. Tax on EPF interest.
Ans: Congratulations on your new opportunity abroad. It's great to see you're planning your EPF withdrawal wisely. Let's address your queries in detail.

When Can You Withdraw Your Full EPF?
You can withdraw your EPF under certain conditions:

Retirement: Full EPF withdrawal is allowed at the age of 58.

Unemployment: If you are unemployed for more than two months, you can withdraw your EPF.

Early Withdrawals
Partial Withdrawal: You can partially withdraw for specific reasons like home purchase, marriage, or education.

After 50: Since you are 50, you can withdraw up to 90% of your EPF one year before your retirement.

Upto What Age Can You Earn Interest on Your EPF?
Your EPF account earns interest until you withdraw the amount. However, there are important points to consider:

Active Accounts: As long as you are contributing, your EPF account remains active and earns interest.

Inactive Accounts: If there are no contributions for three years, your account becomes inactive.

Interest on Inactive Accounts
Interest Continuation: Even if your account is inactive, it continues to earn interest until the age of 58.

Post 58: After 58, interest is credited only if you have not withdrawn the EPF balance.

Tax on EPF Interest
Understanding the tax implications on EPF interest is crucial:

Exempted Interest: Interest earned on EPF is tax-free if you complete five continuous years of service.

Pre-Mature Withdrawal: If you withdraw before completing five years, interest is taxable.

Taxation on Withdrawals
After 5 Years: Withdrawals after five years are tax-free.

Before 5 Years: Taxable as per your income slab, and TDS is deducted if the amount exceeds Rs 50,000.

Analytical Insights
Full EPF Withdrawal at Retirement
Withdrawing EPF at 58 ensures you benefit from tax-free interest. Your funds continue to grow, providing a substantial retirement corpus.

Managing Inactive EPF Accounts
It's wise to keep track of your EPF account even if it's inactive. Ensure your KYC details are updated to avoid any complications during withdrawal.

Tax Planning
Consider tax implications before withdrawing your EPF. Plan withdrawals strategically to minimise tax liability.

Benefits of Regular Monitoring
Regularly monitor your EPF account to ensure it's earning interest. Update your bank details and KYC to avoid any issues during withdrawal.

Conclusion
By understanding when to withdraw your EPF, the interest it earns, and the tax implications, you can make informed decisions. Regular monitoring and strategic planning will help you maximise your EPF benefits.

I retired from service on 31 July 2022 on attaining the age of 60 and my contribution to EPF stopped thereon. I have not withdrawn the EPF amount till date. When I checked "My Passbook" in EPF site, I find the interest till 31/03/23 only credited. The closing balance as on 31/03/24 is the same figure as of 31/03/23, also, "Interest details N/A" is indicated against figure for 31/03/2024. My question is - Is there any time limit for retention of amount in EPF, even after the age of 60, and for how long interest will interest accrue for this amount. P.Raghunath Palakkad, Kerala
Ans: Interest Accrual on EPF
Interest Calculation: EPF continues to earn interest even after retirement.
Time Frame: Interest is credited until three years post-retirement.
Passbook Details: Check for updates periodically for interest credits.
Withdrawal Process
No Immediate Withdrawal Needed: You are not required to withdraw immediately.
Flexibility: You can withdraw your EPF anytime as per your convenience.
Form Submission: Use the correct forms to process withdrawals.
Retention Period
Interest Duration: Interest accrues for three years post-retirement.
Inactive Account: After three years, the account is marked as inactive.
Interest Stoppage: No interest is earned on inactive accounts.
Monitoring Your EPF
Regular Checks: Check your EPF passbook regularly.
Update Issues: Sometimes updates may be delayed, so check periodically.
EPF Website: Use the EPF portal for accurate information.
Final Insights
Interest Earned: EPF continues to earn interest for three years post-retirement.
Inactive Accounts: After three years, the account becomes inactive, and interest stops.

Hello finance guru, I am 45 years old , with 2 kids. I live in a Tier-1 city with ~49 Crores of networth. This includes ~12 crores of investment in real estate (land and a flat at a prime location), ~34 crores in equity, ~1 Cr in Crypto and ~2 Cr in cash. I work in a pharmaceutical firm in an executive role and planning to retire in the next 1 year. My knowledge on finances is average and would like to seek your advise. I would like to generate ~2.5 lakhs per month for expenses from my savings and would like to double my networth in the next 7 years. Could you provide me help on the directions I can take to make this working?
Ans: Hello;

Deducting the real estate and crypto investments from your networth, we have 36 Cr.

You may invest 4 Cr each in 2 equity savings type mutual funds and 2 conservative hybrid debt oriented mutual funds.

If you do a 3% SWP from each of these funds you may expect a monthly payout of around 2.8 L (post-tax).

These funds generally yield 8-9% returns so they will continue to provide inflation adjusted income to you.(6% inflation rate considered)

Balance remains around 20 Cr, while 2 Cr may be retained as liquid fund for contingency requirement, the balance 18 Cr you may invest in combination of mutual funds, PMSs and AIFs.

As you enter retirement phase your focus should shift from "maximising returns" to "decent returns with moderate risk" since return of capital is more important than return on capital.

Dear Sir, I am 53 yrs. I want to retire @60 with a INR 2.00 Cr Corps. Currently I have following SIP Total SIP 30000/- PM Axis Bluechip Fund - Regular Plan - Growth HDFC Mid-Cap Opportunities Fund - Growth Plan Aditya Birla Sun Life Pure Value Fund - Growth Option Aditya Birla Sun Life Equity Advantage Fund - Regular Growth Sundaram Mid Cap Fund Regular Plan - Growth Bajaj Finserv Flexi Cap Fund -Regular Plan-Growth Franklin India Focused Equity Fund - Growth Plan Franklin India Smaller Companies Fund-Growth HDFC Top 100 Fund - Growth Option HDFC Multi Cap Fund - Growth Option I have MF Investment @ 26.00 Lakh Current Value is @ 52.00 Lakh. I have Savings of Rs. 10.00 Lakh, PPF Rs. 5.00 Lakh, Share investment Current Market Value around Rs. 20.00 Lakhs. I don't have any Loan. Insurance INR 1.50 Cr. up age of 70. Per month earning around Rs. 1.25 Lakh. I have a Investment in real estate which can give my INR 40.00 Lakh at current Market Price & Gold Investment of INR 20.00 Lakh which I think sufficient for my daughter Marriage. Current Monthly Expense INR 40-50 K. I am in a new tax regime, so discontinue my ELSS saving and PPF Saving. Suggest how i can increase my Corpus for retirement.
Ans: Hello;

You may top-up your monthly sip by 10% every year for 7 years. This will grow into a sum of around 0.51 Cr.

The MF corpus and direct equity holdings worth 0.72 Cr today will grow into a corpus of 1.59 Cr after 7 years.

Therefore you may achieve your intended corpus of 1.59+ 0.51=2.1 Cr, 7 years from now. A modest return of 12% is assumed from MF and direct equity holdings.

2-3 years before 60 you should start moving your gains from equity funds to liquid or ultra short duration debt funds to protect it against market volatility.

Also good health care insurance for yourself and your spouse.

RE property you may sell at a later date to boost your retirement income.

Happy Investing;
