I completed my B.Tech in Biotechnology in 2024 and initially prepared for the CAT exam. However, I scored a 62 percentile, which isn’t sufficient for admission to a reputed college. I am considering dropping a year to reattempt CAT, but I am concerned about having a second gap year. Since June 2024, I have been learning about finance and business, though I don’t have certifications to validate my knowledge. To bridge this gap, I am currently doing a Financial Analyst Trainee internship through Internshala, but I am unsure of its value in justifying my gap years. I am committed to transitioning into finance and plan to specialize in this field. To strengthen my profile, I have registered for the CFA Level 1 exam in August 2025 and plan to acquire relevant skills through certifications such as Microsoft-certified Excel, SQL, financial modeling, and NISM (Financial Advisor Level 1 & 2). My main concern is whether taking another drop year is the right choice. How should I justify both gap years effectively? Are these certifications and internships sufficient, or should I consider alternative ways to strengthen my profile? I would appreciate your guidance on making the best decision.

Ans: If you are doing CFA along with other internships and courses it could suffice to justify the gap. If you don't plan to do CFA then it is advisable to do a job along with CAT preparation.

Money
Because of social media, people are more aware of mutual funds and the stock market. The inflow of money into these assets is increasing every day. Will this affect returns in the future? Also, should I consider investing in gold ETF?
Ans: Higher Participation Leads to Stability
More retail investors entering the stock market improves liquidity and reduces volatility. This can make markets more stable over time.

Valuation Concerns in the Long Run
When too much money flows into stocks, valuations may rise beyond fundamentals. This can lead to lower future returns or market corrections.

Fund Manager Challenges
Large inflows into mutual funds can make it harder for fund managers to find undervalued stocks, potentially reducing the alpha (excess returns) they generate.

Sector and Thematic Boom
More awareness can cause temporary bubbles in popular sectors. Investors should be cautious and stay diversified.

Should You Invest in Gold ETF?
Gold is a Hedge, Not a Growth Asset
Gold protects against inflation and currency fluctuations but does not generate high long-term returns like equities.

ETFs vs. Physical Gold
Gold ETFs are better than physical gold as they offer liquidity, no storage costs, and easy tracking of market prices.

Portfolio Diversification
A small allocation (5-10%) in gold ETFs can act as a hedge, but over-investing in gold can limit wealth creation.

Final Insights
Stock market returns may moderate in the future, but equities remain the best long-term wealth creator.

Avoid sector hype and focus on active fund management for better risk-adjusted returns.

Gold ETFs are useful for diversification but should not be the core of your portfolio.

Continue SIPs in actively managed mutual funds and adjust allocation based on goals.
