Hi, My son was born in US and he came back with his mother and father -us, when he was young about 3yrs old. He has had his education from 1st STD to 11th - current, in India. He is a oci card holder. When he applies to engineering colleges in India 1 yr from now, will he be considered as an NRI or in general category like all other Indian students. Please confirm

Ans: Pravin Sir, as far as OCI status is concerned, please note (reproduced here the 'State of Eligibility' given on Page No.21 of JEE Information Bulletin 2024), "The State Code of Eligibility for OCI passing the class 12 (or equivalent) examination in India is at part with Indian Nationals. However, OCI passing the class 12 (or equivalent) examination from an institution abroad are eligible for other State Quota Seats or All India Quota Seats (but NOT for Home State Quota Seats) in all NITs, IIITs & Other CFTIs". As far as NRI status is concerned, your son should have completed his 12th from abroad only. And he will be considered as a 'General Category' applicant only. Hi sir, My daughter is an OCI card holder(born in USA), she is doing her schooling in India. Currently studying grade 12 with Maths, Physics, Chemistry n Comp. Sci in ISC board, Chennai. She is preparing for JEE. What are her options for higher studies in India... Will she be Treated as NRI? Couls you please guide us with choices after grade 12.

Ans: Anitha Madam,

She should appear for (minimum) 5-7 Entrance Exams to get admission into any one of the Engineering Colleges in India. Some of them are:

1) JEE
2) COMEDK (Karnataka Colleges)
3) PESSAT (PES University / Bengaluru)
4) SRMJEE (SRM Colleges in Chennai/India)
5) AEEE (Amrita College)
6) VITEE (VIT College)
7) BITSAT (for Birla Institute of Technology)
8) CUET (if she prefers 3-year Degree programs with any one of the 20 Central Universities of India)

Or through the Management Quota, the capitation / annual fees depends upon the College / Location / Stream she prefers.

OCI Reservation is applicable for some of the Entrance Exams mentioned above. However, there will be competition for OCI seats also especially for the national level exams like JEE. Please check the respective websites to know in detail about OCI Reservation.

Hi, My son was born in US and he came back when he was young about 3yrs old. He has had his education from 1st STD to 11th in Mumbai, in India. He is a PIO/OCI card holder. When he applies to engineering colleges in India 1 yr from now, JEE will consider him as general category since he is doing 12th in Mumbai itself. Both parents holding domicile status in Maharashtra, What about his admission category for state Engineering colleges /REC /NIT/VIT etc. What about admission to Karnataka or Kerala in this case. Is there a possibility to get general category admission in this case anywhere in India. ?

Ans: Your Son will come under 'General Category' Only for admission into any Govt or Private Colleges. Your Son can appear for MHT-CET as it his home state and also COMEDK which is open for the Students all over India for admission into any one of the Private Colleges in Bengaluru/Karnataka. Your son can even try for admission into any Private College in Kerala through KEAM (Kerala Engineering, Architecture, and Medical Entrance Exam). Other options are: SITEEE of Symbiosis-Pune, BITSAT of BITS Pilani, PES University of Bengaluru, KIITEE of Kalinga-Bhubaneswar, AEEE of Amrita University, MET of Manipal, SRMJEE & VITEEE. With your score and category, there are chances to get admission to mid-tier NITs to core branches. But if you are ready to take the risk, it is possible to get a CSE branch at the newly formed NIT-Mizoram or Meghalaya.

as per last year's cutoff you are not eligible for JOSAA counselling. You can improve your score and get admissions in your dream college. Control negatives, don't give into the temptation of marking the option if you are not sure, options are designed that way, you commit a mistake and you will get a wrong answer there waiting to be marked.
30-35 questions correctly answered without any negative marking can get you your desired college.
