Hello - My wife was prescribed Hemaforte 35mg in Canada by her family doctor but she has moved back to India now and will run our of this medicine soon. Hemaforte has Heme Iron Polypeptides which she has got adjusted to. We are able to find similar medicine by the name Lupiheme in India but it comes only in 12mg. Considering she is currently taking 35mg, is it advisable to take 3 tablets of Lupiheme 12mg together to get her 36mg of this iron? Please advise.

Ans: How much was her Hemoglobin before she started taking this tab?
How many months, has she taken this?
Iron supplementation should be given for 4months if it is for Iron deficiency Anaemia therapy
After 4 months we repeat the Hb and See
Then she can go for prophylaxis through food sources or any other natural form of Iron unless otherwise there is an ongoing loss as a cause. So any brand made in India, particularly Tonoferron should be good

Towards Dec end, her Hemoglobin was 102 (range 120-140 g/L) and Ferritin was 4 (range 15-272 ug/L). She has taken this tablet for 3 months now. We are yet to get another Hemoglobin and Ferritin test done. She has started with 12mg of Lupiheme this week. Please let us know what should be our next course of action assuming not much improvement in her iron levels. Thanks.

Ans: If there is no response to Oral iron, there is a problem with either absorption or there may be some chronic illness underlying. Please get the Hb Level,serum iron and Ferritin level after three months which is anytime now. If it is still low you need to go for further investigations
