In the New tax regime income up to 12 lakhs has been made tax free. If this total income of 12 lakhs includes 3.5 lakhs of capital gains, is the total income still tax free or this 12 lakhs is exclusive to salary income only, as is made to appear in some of the write ups in newspapers for the last 10 days and creating confusion in the minds of readers.

Ans: Capital gains is different and has its own deductions whereas income is seperate with its own deductions
So yes there will be some tax as per the final computation

Ans: Person earning income (other than long term capital gain from listed shares) upto Rs.7 lacs will don't have to pay any tax as under new tax regime, 100% of tax rebate will be allowed.

For the FY 23-24, my income from salary is ?7,02,876 as per form 16. I also have interest income of ?9,120. I also sold mutual funds and had long term capital gains of ?87,983. I want to know as to how my total income and tax would be computed. I was under the impression that my salaries and interest income will be treated differently and will not be eligible for tax under the new tax regime and my long term capital gain will be exempted since it is less 1 lakh, thus resulting in nil income tax. Is it correct or not?

Ans: Assuming mutual fund redeemed are equity based scheme, tax on said redemption will be NIL. Tax on salary and interest will be Rs26,200 plus cess.

Ans: As per budget proposal for FY 24-25, tax on 12 lacs of income will be Rs 71500 under new tax regime, assuming there is no special rate income

Yes. Maths is compulsory for engineering admission. It would be possible for him to take Mathematics as an Isolated subject and pass it with a score. But it is now too late.
