I am currently getting a monthly salary of INR 1,00,000. Under the New Tax Regime, a monthly tax deduction of INR 9,000 is being made from my salary. Based on my understanding of the current tax laws, employer contributions to the NPS (Tier-1) are eligible for tax deductions under the New Tax Regime. Accordingly, a 10% deduction is already being deposited into my Employer NPS Tier-1 account. Apart from this NPS deduction, I would like to know if there are any other viable avenues or strategies available to reduce my monthly tax liability of INR 9,000 under the New Tax Regime. I am investing in the Public Provident Fund (PPF), Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY), Mutual Funds, and Direct Equities. I currently do not have any active loans or EMIs. Kindly review my profile and advise on any potential tax restructuring or optimization methods available to me.

Ans: Appreciate the way you have planned your finances. You already have a disciplined investment habit and have also understood one of the key tax benefits available under the New Tax Regime. Since you have no loans or EMIs and are investing regularly, your focus should be on tax efficiency as well as long-term wealth creation.

» Understanding Your Current Position

Monthly salary: Around Rs.1,00,000.
Monthly TDS: Around Rs.9,000.
Employer is contributing 10% of your Basic Salary to NPS Tier-1.
Investing in PPF, SSY, mutual funds and direct equities.
Following the New Tax Regime.

Based on the information shared, there are only limited opportunities available to reduce tax under the New Tax Regime because most deductions available under the Old Tax Regime are not permitted.

» Tax Saving Opportunities Under the New Tax Regime

Employer contribution to NPS is one of the biggest tax-saving benefits still available. If your employer is willing to restructure your salary and increase this contribution within the permitted limits, it can further improve tax efficiency without reducing your retirement savings.
If your employer provides tax-exempt components that are allowed under the New Tax Regime, review your salary structure. Depending on company policy, certain allowances and reimbursements may still receive favourable tax treatment.
If you are eligible for standard deduction, ensure it is already being considered while calculating TDS. In most companies, this is automatically done.

» Review Your Salary Structure

Instead of focusing only on investments, ask your HR or payroll team to review your salary breakup.

Possible areas to review include:

Employer NPS contribution.
Salary components that are tax-efficient under current rules.
Any reimbursements permitted under your employer's compensation policy.
Performance bonus structure, if applicable.

A well-structured salary sometimes gives better tax efficiency than searching for new investment products.

» About Your Existing Investments

Your investments already cover multiple financial goals.

PPF helps in long-term debt allocation and offers stability.
SSY is an excellent long-term investment if it is meant for your daughter's future.
Mutual funds help in long-term wealth creation.
Direct equity can generate higher returns but needs regular monitoring and diversification.

Continue investing based on your financial goals instead of making investments only for tax saving.

» Avoid Investing Only to Save Tax

Many investors end up buying products only because they promise tax benefits.

That approach often leads to:

Poor liquidity.
Lower long-term returns.
Products that may not match financial goals.

Since you are already under the New Tax Regime, your investment decisions should be driven mainly by wealth creation and goal planning rather than tax deductions.

» Other Areas Worth Reviewing

A complete financial review should also cover:

Emergency fund of at least 6 to 12 months of expenses.
Adequate health insurance for self and family.
Pure term life insurance if someone depends on your income.
Nomination updated across all investments.
A Will for smooth succession planning.
Annual portfolio review and asset allocation.
Rebalancing investments whenever required.

These may not reduce tax but significantly improve your overall financial health.

» Finally

Based on the details shared, there are very few additional tax-saving options available under the New Tax Regime beyond employer NPS contribution and proper salary structuring.

Rather than searching for new tax deductions, your focus should now be on:

Optimising your salary structure with your employer.
Continuing disciplined investments.
Building long-term wealth.
Reviewing insurance, emergency fund and estate planning regularly.
Getting your complete financial plan reviewed every year so that taxation, investments and retirement planning remain aligned.

Hello Sir, I am not sure if you will be able to answer my query. This is with regards to Income tax deductions. My gross salary is around Rs.1 lakh per month. Have done investment declaration mentioning the investment in NPS 50 K, 80 C upto Rs.1.5 lacs. 80D mediclaim insurance for self Inspite of the same there is a tax of around 7000 every month's it's getting deducted. Pls advise if there are any other investments which I can do to save on tax deductions.
Ans: You seem to be on the right track with your tax-saving strategies! Here's a breakdown and some suggestions to potentially reduce your monthly tax deduction:

Current Deductions:

NPS (Section 80CCD(1B)): This allows an additional deduction of up to Rs.50,000 on top of the Rs.1.5 lakh limit under Section 80C.
Section 80C Investments: Great! You're utilizing the full Rs.1.5 lakh limit for deductions on various investments like PPF, ELSS Mutual Funds etc.
Medical Insurance (Section 80D): This covers premiums paid for health insurance for yourself.
Potential Additional Deductions:

House Rent Allowance (HRA): If you pay rent, check if you can claim an HRA exemption. This can significantly reduce your taxable income. The exempted amount depends on your rent payment, city type, and your salary structure.
Leave Travel Concession (LTA): If your employer provides Leave Travel Allowance (LTA), ensure you utilize it for travel and submit the necessary proofs to claim exemption.
Interest on Home Loan (Section 24): If you have a home loan, you can claim deductions for the interest paid on the loan amount.
Here are some additional tips:

Review your Investment Choices: Ensure your Section 80C investments are spread across different options to balance risk and return.
Professional Tax (PT): Since you mentioned monthly deductions, it's possible a part of it might be Professional Tax (PT). PT varies depending on your state and salary.

I would like to seek your advice on tax-saving options. My yearly income is approximately ?35 lakhs. Every month, ?28,000 is deducted for PF. I have medical insurance with a premium of ?50,000 and I contribute to NPS over 12 months. Additionally, I have a home loan with an annual interest payment of ?2 lakhs. Could you please suggest some ways to save on taxes? Thank you for your assistance.
Ans: With a yearly income of Rs. 35 lakhs, you fall into a higher tax bracket, so it's essential to optimise your tax-saving strategies.

Let's explore various options to help you reduce your taxable income and increase your savings.

1. Utilising Section 80C Deductions
Section 80C offers deductions of up to Rs. 1.5 lakh on various investments and expenses. Given your salary, it's vital to ensure you're fully utilising this limit.

Provident Fund (PF) Contributions:

Your monthly PF deduction of Rs. 28,000 amounts to Rs. 3.36 lakhs annually. However, only Rs. 1.5 lakh of this can be claimed under Section 80C.
National Pension System (NPS):

Contributions to NPS are eligible for an additional Rs. 50,000 deduction under Section 80CCD(1B). This is over and above the Rs. 1.5 lakh limit under Section 80C.
Home Loan Principal Repayment:

The principal repayment of your home loan is also eligible for deduction under Section 80C. Ensure you include this when calculating your total 80C limit.
Other 80C Investment Options:

If you have not exhausted your Rs. 1.5 lakh limit under Section 80C, consider investing in other eligible options such as Public Provident Fund (PPF), Equity-Linked Savings Scheme (ELSS), and life insurance premiums.
2. Leveraging Section 24 for Home Loan Interest
Interest Payment Deduction:
You can claim a deduction of up to Rs. 2 lakh on the interest paid on your home loan under Section 24(b). You've mentioned an annual interest payment of Rs. 2 lakh, which you can fully utilise to reduce your taxable income.
3. Maximising Health Insurance Benefits under Section 80D
Health Insurance Premium:
You are already paying a premium of Rs. 50,000 for medical insurance. Under Section 80D, you can claim a deduction for health insurance premiums up to Rs. 25,000 for yourself, spouse, and dependent children.
If your parents are senior citizens, you can claim an additional deduction of Rs. 50,000 for their health insurance premiums. If they are not senior citizens, the limit is Rs. 25,000.
4. Additional Deductions under Section 80E for Education Loans
Education Loan Interest:
If you have an education loan for yourself, spouse, or children, you can claim a deduction on the interest paid under Section 80E. This deduction is available for up to 8 years or until the interest is paid off, whichever is earlier.
5. Contributing to the National Pension System (NPS)
Additional Deduction for NPS Contributions:

Besides the Rs. 50,000 deduction under Section 80CCD(1B), you can also claim a deduction for your own NPS contributions under Section 80C, as mentioned earlier. This can be part of your Rs. 1.5 lakh limit.
Employer Contribution:

If your employer contributes to your NPS account, it can be claimed as a deduction under Section 80CCD(2). This is an additional deduction and does not fall under the Rs. 1.5 lakh limit of Section 80C.
6. Donations and Charitable Contributions under Section 80G
Eligible Donations:

Contributions to certain charitable organisations and relief funds are eligible for deductions under Section 80G. The deduction percentage varies depending on the organisation and the donation amount.
Claiming Deductions:

Ensure you have valid receipts and the organisation is eligible under Section 80G before claiming the deduction. This can help reduce your taxable income while contributing to a good cause.
7. Claiming Deductions for Savings Account Interest under Section 80TTA
Interest on Savings Account:

If you earn interest on your savings account, you can claim a deduction of up to Rs. 10,000 under Section 80TTA. This deduction is available for individual and HUF taxpayers.
Interest on Fixed Deposits (FDs):

Interest on FDs is fully taxable. However, senior citizens can claim a deduction of up to Rs. 50,000 on interest income from FDs, savings accounts, and post office schemes under Section 80TTB.
8. Avoiding Common Tax Mistakes
Accurate Record Keeping:

Maintain records of all your investments, insurance premiums, home loan statements, and other eligible expenses. Accurate records ensure that you claim all possible deductions and avoid unnecessary tax liabilities.
Tax Planning Throughout the Year:

Tax planning should be an ongoing process, not just something to consider at the end of the financial year. Regularly review your investments and expenses to maximise your tax-saving opportunities.
9. Final Insights
By strategically planning your investments and expenses, you can significantly reduce your tax burden. Ensure you are fully utilising deductions under Sections 80C, 80D, and 24(b) for your provident fund contributions, home loan interest, and medical insurance.

Consider contributing to the National Pension System (NPS) for additional tax benefits and explore other options like charitable donations under Section 80G. With careful planning, you can achieve substantial tax savings and improve your financial well-being.

It's always a good idea to consult with a Certified Financial Planner to tailor these strategies to your specific situation. They can provide detailed guidance based on your financial goals and current tax liabilities.

Career
sir my daughter is in class 10th now and want to join NDa later she is an athlete and a sergeant rank holder in Ncc.but her height is only 160 cm what is her chance of admission
Ans: Shalini Madam, Your daughter has excellent chances of NDA admission, as her 160 cm height exceeds the 152 cm minimum requirement for the Army and Navy, while her athletic and NCC Sergeant background will give her a distinct advantage during the 5-day SSB personality interview. To secure admission amid intense competition—where over 400,000 aspirants vie for around 400 seats (with approximately 20–35 reserved for women)—she must follow a strategic preparation roadmap: master Class 11 and 12 mathematics, English, and General Studies during Classes 10 to 12, clear the UPSC written exam, and then pass the SSB interview. For physical eligibility, she must maintain a proportionate weight (approx. 46–56 kg) and build stamina to run 2.4 km in 15 minutes, alongside doing 20 sit-ups and 15 push-ups. If she wishes to explore equivalent career alternatives later, she can target the graduate-level NCC Special Entry Scheme (direct SSB via 'C' certificate), CDS, or AFCAT. Finally, to maximize her remaining natural growth window, she can use practical height tips like hanging from a bar, practicing Tadasana, playing explosive sports like basketball, and maintaining a protein-and-calcium-rich diet with deep sleep. Though there may not be major changes in the eligibility criteria, it is advisable to thoroughly go through the eligibility criteria, admission process, etc. when applying for the NDA or any other exams mentioned above. While major changes to the eligibility criteria are unlikely, it is highly recommended to thoroughly review the official eligibility guidelines and admission processes before applying for the NDA or any alternative exams mentioned above. All The Best for Your Daughter's Prosperous Future!
