I have been managing diabetes for a few years now, and recently I’ve started experiencing frequent gum swelling and mild bleeding while brushing. I have read that diabetes can affect oral health and increase the risk of infections. Could you please explain how blood sugar levels impact dental and gum health, and what specific oral care precautions diabetic patients should follow to prevent complications?

Ans: Diabetes can influence oral health in several interconnected ways by making the immune system becomes less effective. More glucose in saliva feeds harmful bacteria, there is reduced blood flow to the gums and saliva production is reduced. People with diabetes are more likely to develop gingivitis and periodontitis, and these conditions may progress more quickly if blood sugar is not well controlled. Keep blood sugar levels well managed, brush twice daily with a soft?bristled toothbrush, floss daily and maintain regular dental checkups.

My age is 63 yrs and am diabetic since 7 yrs. My fasting sugar varies between 120-130 and PP 170-180. HBa1c is 7.5. Am taking Glycomet 500 SR twice and Omen 20 once for BP. My doctor has advised control the HBa1c within 7. Please advise how I would maintain the same Secondly for tooth ache the Dentist has prescribed RR Sensofrom gel. Should I use the same toothpaste as it contains glycerine? Thanks and regards

Ans: Yes getting HbA1c to 7% or below would be ideal. Diet, daily walk/ exercise are the key, along with appropriate medicines. Dental Surgeons will be the best to advice regarding the right paste.

I am 65 years old. Have diabetes since 15Plus years. Now, I face the problem of foot irritation and numbness. Sugar level is fro 190 to 250. I need your advise on foot irritation and numbness.

Ans: You have likely developed diabetic neuropathy. You will need to control your sugars much better. In addition please check for any thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies and rule out other conditions that can also cause neuropathy. Have your eyes checked as well. Check your urine for protein leakage as these conditions also go hand in hand with diabetic neuropathy. Please consult a physician either in person or online for further advice and appropriate treatment.

Hello Sir, My uncle is 70 years old and a chronic diabetic, but his sugar levels are are always between 100/120. he is taking oral medicine (and not on to Insulin) For the past 4 months he had unriary infections and was taking antibiotics. Last couple of days the sugar falls alarmingly low, like around 40 and needs to consume sugar or something to boost the levels. Even after eating it is only around 80, 90 like that. Why is this happening and what do you advise?

Ans: Your uncle’s sudden drop in blood sugar could be due to interactions between his diabetes medication and the antibiotics he’s been taking, or changes in his overall health status. Consult his doctor immediately. His medication regimen may need to be adjusted or simplified. Monitor his blood sugar frequently.

Lately, she seems to be getting infections more frequently, especially minor skin and urinary infections that take longer than usual to heal. We are worried that her age and diabetic condition may be weakening her immunity. Could you please explain why elderly diabetic patients are more prone to infections and what preventive steps—both dietary and lifestyle-related—can help strengthen her immunity and reduce recurring infections?

Ans: Aging and diabetes each affect the body’s defenses, and together they can make infections more common and slower to heal. High blood sugar affects immune function, reduced circulation, nerve changes, age?related immune decline and higher glucose in urine. Stable blood sugar helps the immune system work more effectively. Your grandmother should have whole grains instead of refined grains, plenty of vegetables, lean proteins (lentils, eggs, fish, poultry, tofu) and healthy fats (nuts, seeds, olive oil); have adequate protein; limit added sugars and good hydration. Good hygiene habits, good skin and foot care, support for urinary health with adequate fluid intake, and adequate sleep.
